  • Shock Head Coach Bill Laimbeer

On the differences between this game and the home opener at Detroit when the Shock was victorious 78-67…
“We shot poorly this game. We weren’t able to get into a rhythm offensively. We went long stretches without scoring and we can’t do that. We need people to step up.”

On what he told his players when they went down 16-2 to start the half…
“Just keep fighting. They were making all of the shots. We weren’t making any shots. They had more energy at the start of the game than we did but we just fought through it. I’m proud of them for doing that.”

On the state of the league…
“The league is in great shape. It is growing every day. The players are phenomenal and the competition is wonderful.”

On the absence of Swin Cash and her role on the bench…
“She is our captain and our leader. She loves to be on the floor but unfortunately now she can’t so any support she can lend is a positive.”

On his frustration with the referees and their lack of calls against the Sun…
“We have one of the best talents and most athletic players in the league (guard Deanna Nolan) and when she goes to the basket and gets hammered and there is no call, it is very frustrating not only for the player but for the fans.”

    Shock Guard Chandi Jones

    On the game…
“The Sun have a lot more team chemistry than last time we faced them. It was a dog fight between two good teams tonight and this time Connecticut came out on top. We knew coming into this game that Connecticut was going to come at us really hard because we got them the first game. We know that they are a great team at home. At the beginning everything that they threw up at the basket was going in. We just knew we had to stick together and weather the storm. We knew that sooner or later down the line they would make their run and that we needed to make our run.

On the positives of fighting back from an early 16-2 deficit…
This game gives us a lot of confidence. We can’t lay our heads down but we fought. We were down 16-2 and we could have given up but we played hard the whole game. Time just ran out. We definitely have some positives from this game that give us confidence. We just have to go back in practice and work on some of the things that gave us problems tonight.

On holding Dydek to four points…
We were just trying to keep her as far away from the basket as we could and we did not want to give her any easy lay-ups. That is what we focused on tonight and it seemed to work.

    Shock Forward Ayana Walker

    On the game…
“We came out flat. They are a great team and have great players but I think it was more us than them. We fought real hard. We always seem to get down, its more about what we do to ourselves than what our opponents do to us.”

    On out rebounding the Sun…
“We always focus on rebounding because that usually wins games. We did out rebound them but I guess it did not determine this one.”

    Sun Head Coach Mike Thibault

“We tried to make it interesting. Give a team 21 offensive boards, 77 field goal attempts to 53. I thought our initial defense was terrific. We just did a poor job of blocking out for two stretches. It’s a great win. We need to win these games to keep our streak alive at home.”

    Sun Forward Nykesha Sales

On how this win will affect their upcoming road trip:
“We have to keep playing this way. This road trip will be our test.”

On the physical nature of the game:
“That’s just the history of their team. Detroit is a very aggressive team that works hard on the boards. That was expected.”

On getting contributions from multiple people:
“I think that’s why we’re good. Everybody plays together. Nobody has to do too much. I don’t have to score 30. TJ (Taj McWilliams-Franklin) doesn’t have to score 30. We get up and down the floor and we have great chemistry.”

On the Shock having 21 offensive rebounds:
“(The Shock) were getting second chances on every possession. That’s what you have to do to stay in the game- get second chances. They weren’t shooting real well, but they were getting the rebounds. Look at the score. At the end there, we were only up by six.”

    Sun Guard Lindsey Whalen

    On the game:
“We got the win. We looked really good at times and (we looked) really ugly at times. This was a big conference game and we got the win.”

On not scoring in the first half:
“I didn’t always have a good angle to score there in the beginning. A lot of those shots just weren’t falling. (You’ve got to do) whatever it takes to help the team. It might not be my night to score, but I was able to rebound the ball.”

    Sun Forward Brooke Wyckoff

    On beating Detroit:
“It’s huge. It’s a great confidence builder. We take a win any way we can get it. We’re going to face teams that are long like that, so it was a good lesson to learn.”

    On her three-point shooting:
“People were getting mehe ball and I had room and I just launched them and they went in.”
