The 2006 WNBA Champion Detroit Shock are inviting everyone in the area downtown to help them celebrate their weekend victory over the Sacramento Monarchs.
On Tuesday, September 12, starting at Noon, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will serve as master of ceremonies at a celebration for the Detroit Shock who were crowned 2006 WNBA Champions after their 80-75 victory in Game Five of the WNBA Finals on Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.
The celebration will take place outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building on Jefferson Ave., in front of a "specially decorated" Spirit of Detroit statue. Players, coaches and select VIPs will address the crowd and the Shock' 2006 WNBA Championship Trophy will be on display.
"Our fans have been great all year and to bring them a WNBA Championship is a great honor for us," said Craig Turnbull, the Shock' COO. "We want everyone to come down on Tuesday to help us celebrate!"
The Shock defeated the Sacramento Monarchs, three games to two in the 2006 WNBA Finals. Flint native Deanna Nolan, who averaged 17.0 points and 4.2 rebounds including a game-high 24 points in Game 5, was named MVP of the Finals. The 2006 Championship is the second title in franchise history.
