Auburn Hills - Detroit dropped its 11th straight game to open the 2002 season in Bill Laimbeer’s coaching debut with the team, 80-59, to the Orlando Miracle. A 21-6 Miracle run midway through the first period gave Orlando a 13-point lead with 8:54 to go before the half. The Miracle extended their lead to 16 at the break and to 23 points, 53-30, with 15:02 left in the game, and the Shock never seriously threatened the rest of the way. Detroit was limited to just 28.6 percent shooting (8-of-28) in the second half. Swin Cash scored a career-high 20 points, 16 of which came after the break. Nykesha Sales led all scorers with 24 points on the night.
