Detroit Shock 96, Sacramento Monarchs 108

Sacramento – Every starter in the Monarchs lineup scored at least 16 points as Detroit gave up an opponent record 108 points in a 12-point loss to Sacramento. It was the third most points allowed in the history of the WNBA. Despite the lopsided score, the game was close for much of the first half as the Shock held a one-point lead at 40-39 with 4:02 to go before halftime. Sacramento ended the period on a 13-4 run to take an eight-point lead into the locker room.

The Monarchs led by just five with 4:25 gone in the second half, 61-56, but went on a 10-2 run to push the lead into double-digits. Another 10-2 run later in the period gave Sacramento a 20-point cushion with 6:42 to go. Detroit began chipping away at the Monarchs lead reducing the advantage to nine with 2:57 left in the second half, and to five with 52.8 seconds on the clock. However, the Monarchs scored the final seven points of the game from the free throw line for the win.

Tangela Smith and Kedra Holland-Corn each scored 19 points for the Monarchs as six Sacramento players reached double figures in scoring. Ticha Penicheiro had a 17-point, 14-assist double-double for the Monarchs and Yolanda Griffith added an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double of her own. Wendy Palmer scored a Shock-high 20 points.
