Miami – After Barbara Farris nailed two free throws to give Detroit a two-point lead, Marlies Askamp missed a game-tying free throw with 13.6 seconds remaining in overtime and Ruth Riley and Sandy Brondello committed turnovers on the Sol’s final two possessions to give the Shock its first win of the season. Detroit led for just 52 seconds in the first half, and never by more than three points in the second as the team’s traded the lead nine times and were tied up on four occasions after intermission.
Neither team led by more than three points for the final 15:14 of regulation and Brondello’s jumper with 40.1 seconds left in the second sent the game into overtime. Brondello (23) and Sheri Sam (21) combined for 44 of Miami’s 67 points as the Sol received zero scoring help from its bench in the game.
Astou Ndiaye-Diatta and Dominique Canty each scored 16 points for the Shock who also outscored The Sol 21-9 from the free throw line.
