The Sun (8-7) swept the home-and-home series, having beaten the Shock (7-6) in Connecticut on Friday. They moved into a virtual tie atop the Eastern Conference with the defending WNBA champions.
Sales made 8-of-20 shots, including a 3-pointer that gave the Sun the lead for good at 72-70 with 1:15 to play. She added a layup with 49 seconds remaining.
The Shock pulled within 74-72 with 38 seconds left on a basket by Swin Cash, who scored 20 points. Detroit got a stop and had a chance to tie or win, but Chandi Jones missed a 3-pointer.
Wendy Palmer scored 18 points for Connecticut, which had five players in double figures. Rookie Lindsay Whalen had 10 points and a team-record 13 assists.
Ruth Riley had 18 points and nine rebounds and Cheryl Ford added 15 and 10 for Detroit, which has lost three of four. Elaine Powell had a career-high 10 assists.
The Sun trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half but closed to 39-32 at halftime. Palmer scored eight points in a 12-0 surge that gave Connecticut a 51-45 lead with 11:48 to play.
