Detroit Shock 66, Charlotte Sting 78

Detroit’s five-game winning streak came to an end as the Charlotte Sting shot 51.7 percent from the field. The Shock led just once the entire evening when a Cindy Brown free throw gave Detroit a 3-2 lead. Charlotte led by as many as 15 points, but the Shock closed the gap to three points on two occasions in the second half. A 9-1 Sting run late in the period proved to be the final nail in the coffin.

Dawn Staley posted a 13-point, 10 assist evening for the Sting, and Vicky Bullett led Charlotte with 20 points. Korie Hlede’s 22 points led all scorers. The Shock were without the services of Val Whiting, Astou Ndiaye-Diatta and Dominique Canty due to league suspensions handed down following the team’s altercation with the Cleveland Rockers two days prior. Detroit was also minus Rachael Sporn who was placed on the Injured List on July 24 with a grade three ACL injury in her right knee.
