Neighborhood Service Organization Welcomes Farris and Zap to "Celebrity Basketball Game"
"I haven't seen people having this much fun in a long time," Detroit Shock forward Barbara Farris on Friday, November 12 at the Northwest Activities Center in Detroit. The people having fun were part of the NSO's "Celebrity Basketball Game" with Detroit Denby High School and 105.9 FM. Denby's work with the NSO's gun violence prevention program has been second to none this year, encouraging students and younger kids to stay away from weapons and violence.
The "fun" was all thanks to the hard work and effort that both groups have been putting into their message lately. Now, they all got together to play a little hoops, give away some much-deserved recognition, and of course, have some fun. The Shock were lucky enough to be included in the wonderful program, bringing Farris, mascot Zap, and the 2003 WNBA Championship Trophy to the festivities. Before the game even started, the musically inclined Zap was doing the shake, mixed with what looked to be some improvised Michael Jackson moves with some of the young ladies from Detroit Denby. After the dance party had ended, it was time for Team 105.9 to take on the Denby/NSO team.
Farris, watching from the sidelines as an honorary coach, hollered out suggestions to the Denby/NSO squad. In between encouraging remarks, she started to notice some real talent from the two female guards on her team. "What's her name? I'm callin' my coach at Tulane. These girls can ball," Farris said.
When halftime rolled around, Farris said some encouraging words to the faithful and raffled off some nice Shock items to the crowd. As she and Zap departed, she signed every single autograph on her way out of the building. "I love events like these," Farris said. It's for reasons like that, that Detroit loves Barbara Farris as well.
