In Game 2 of the WNBA Finals, Phoenix defeated Detroit 98-70 thanks in no small part to their run-and-gun style of play. The win followed a 108-100 Game 1 loss for Phoenix, in which the Shock used their inside presences to silence the Mercury. Rebounding from her below average Game 1 of 11 points and 4 rebounds, this week's Peak Performer, Tangela Smith, made herself heard and seen in Game 2.
The only player to have a double-double on the night, Smith scored 18 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds. She wasn't only a threat from the inside, but helped to spread the Detroit defense, hitting four of six 3-pointers. In addition, she scored seven of 11 from the field.
'My teammates found me and I felt comfortable," said Smith. "So I just continued to shoot the ball. Fortunately it went in."
"Tangela Smith is a playoff experienced person and she showed it tonight," says Mercury coach Paul Westhead of Smith's Game 2 performance.
It is obvious that the Mercury have a size disadvantage with the 6-4 Smith matching up against Detroit's 6-8 Katie Feenstra and 6-6 Kara Braxton. But in Game 2, the hot-handed center was larger than life. As Game 3 approaches, onlookers will no longer be assessing how big Smith is but rather how big she can play.
