WNBA to Help Raise Awarness, Funds and Inspire Others in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

The league will raise money through the annual WNBA Cares Breast Health Auction, continuing an effort that has raised more than $2.5 million in the fight against breast cancer.

NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2012 – The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and its teams will help raise awareness and funds and inspire others in the fight against breast cancer during WNBA Breast Health Awareness Week Sept. 16-23.

Two televised games on ESPN2 -- the New York Liberty at the San Antonio Silver Stars (Sept. 18, 8 p.m. ET) and, on the last day of regular season, the Phoenix Mercury hosting the Seattle Storm (Sept. 23, 3 p.m. ET) -- will help focus attention on the initiative. NBA TV also will televise 10 games during the week, highlighted by a clash of western conference powers on Sept. 20 with the 2011 WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx visiting the Los Angeles Sparks (7:30 p.m. ET).

Highlights of the games will consist of pink-and-white uniforms worn by the home team and the official WNBA Breast Health Awareness logo displayed on the court including Spalding courtside rotational signage during ESPN2 games. In addition, Breast Health Awareness shooting shirts, which players wear during the week, will be available at NBAstore.com.

The league will raise money through the annual WNBA Cares Breast Health Auction, continuing an effort that has raised more than $2.5 million in the fight against breast cancer. The auction will include Spalding pink-and-white autographed basketballs donated by all 12 teams. The auction will launch Sept. 17, on WNBA.com and run through Oct. 1, with proceeds benefiting WNBA Cares Community Partners.

As part of the weeklong series of events, all WNBA teams will host an in-arena Breast Health Awareness Night featuring special programming, including halftime presentations to honor local cancer survivors, live auctions, and the distribution of educational materials in partnership with local breast cancer organizations. Teams are also hosting a variety of community events in an effort to generate additional awareness about breast cancer. As an associate partner of WNBA Breast Health Awareness Week, Spalding will donate a portion from each pink and white basketball they sell to WNBA Cares Community Partners that support breast cancer research.

WNBA.com will provide a special section for the auction, which will include daily content and editorial pieces on breast health awareness.
