Team Needs:
The San Antonio Stars were unable to overcome the Draft lottery odds and capture the No. 1 pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft. However, as Lorne Chan of SAStars.com notes, the only other time the Stars had the No. 2 overall pick in 2007, they traded the pick to acquire All-Star Becky Hammon, who helped turn San Antonio in a playoff team.

The Stars’ offseason luck took another hit two weeks ago when the team announced that guard Danielle Robinson had undergone Achilles surgery, all but ending her 2016 season more than a month before season tip-off. Robinson was the team’s leading playmaker — she finished third in the league in assists (5.0) — and paired with Kayla McBride, the Stars had a promising a young backcourt to build upon.

San Antonio finished in the middle of the pack on defense in 2015, but ranked last in offensive efficiency, scoring just 90.4 points per 100 possessions — over nine points below the league average of 99.9.

That leads back to Draft night and the decision head coach and general manager Dan Hughes has to make for the future of his franchise. There will be talented players on the board that the Stars could take and add to their mix of young talent and veteran leadership.

“The last time we had a No. 2 pick, it ended up being pretty impactful in a lot of ways,” Hughes said. “I think that’s what we’ll look for again. We’re going to have options, and we’re going to look for a face of the franchise.”
