Wings Outlast Aces Behind All-Star Duo


LAS VEGAS, NV. –  The Wings returned to the win column and moved to 7-7 on the season with a 97-91 victory over the Las Vegas Aces behind the All-Star duo of Skylar Diggins-Smith and Liz Cambage, who combined for 48 points.

The Aces hopped out to an early 6-0 lead, but the Wings fought back to tie the game at 28 after the opening quarter. Rookie Azurá Stevens led the Wings with eight first-quarter points.

The two teams continued to battle in the second quarter as neither team could pull out to more than a four-point lead. Cambage scored and was fouled on an inbound play with two seconds remaining in the half and converted the old-fashioned three-point play to give the Wings a 55-52 lead at the break. Diggins-Smith scored 13 points in the first half to lead the Wings.

Both teams went back-and-forth with the scored knotted up at 66 midway through the third quarter. The Wings extended out to a 75-72 lead heading into the final period.

The Wings finished the game with 10-2 run to take a 97-91 victory over the Aces. Diggins-Smith led the Wings with 29 points on 9-for-17 from the field. She also added eight assists and two rebounds. Cambage recorded her second straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while adding three assists and two blocks. Glory Johnson added 14 points and four rebounds off the bench. Stevens finished with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.

The Aces were led by Kayla McBride, who scored a career-high 38 points on 14-for-22 from the field. A’ja Wilson added 22 points, added 15 rebounds and dished out a career-high eight assists.

The Wings will kick off their three-game homestand with the Minnesota Lynx on July 1 before taking on the Chicago Sky on July 3 and the Indiana Fever on July 5.
