What They're Listening To: Lynx, Fever Players Reveal Gameday Playlists

INDIANAPOLIS – Every athlete prepares for the big game in their own way. Some have set sleep times, some have set meal times, and others get to the arena at a specific time.

Also key to getting many athletes focused and ready for the big game is what’s playing in their headphones throughout the day. WNBA.com asked players on the Lynx and the Fever what they’ll be listening to ahead of Game 3.

“Some of everything,” Fever center/forward Erlana Larkins said. “I think right now I’m going to go home and listen to something relaxing to ease my mind, because I’m anxious. I’m ready. I’m hype and the game isn’t until 8 o’clock. But then as the game gets here, something more upbeat. Some hip-hop.”

Larkins said she’ll probably vibe to Drake or Lil Wayne prior to Game 3.

Her teammate, Shenise Johnson, said she listens to the same playlist before every game.

“A little bit of Fetty Wap,” Johnson said. “We got some Eminem. ‘You better lose yourself in the…’ that right there? That’s a classic. I pretty much play that before every game. You try to approach every game the same. I’m kind of a routine type of person. I eat the same things, sleep at the same times, especially on game day. But, I’m not superstitious!”

“When I get in the shower I listen to gospel before the game,” said Shavonte Zellous. “And then it’s all turn up music after that. It’s all Future, Drake and all of that type of stuff.”

Drake was a very popular answer. But not every player gets ready for the game with hip-hop.

“I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum,” Fever forward Marissa Coleman explained. “Mine is more mellow. I have a playlist that I’ve made, there’s like Coldplay on there, there’s like Alabama Shakes.”

“Yeah, she tries to make us listen to that,” Zellous said while laughing.

Game 3 is sure to be a gritty, grind-it-out game like the first two games in Minnesota. Maya Moore will be looking to help her team reverse the outcome from Game 3 of the 2012 WNBA Finals, which provided a scenario eerily similar to the one that has played out in the WNBA Finals 2015 presented by Boost Mobile.

So, what will the 2013 WNBA Finals MVP be listening to?

“I just bought the new Andy Mineo ‘Uncomfortable’ album,” Moore said.

Center Sylvia Fowles said she always listens to Rick Ross on gamedays.

“This song called ‘All Over My Body’,” Lynx guard Renee Montgomery said. “I got a little bit of Lecrae playing. And some Drake. That’s usually what I stick with. I also listen to some Rihanna and Justin Bieber as well. Those are just my baes.”
