Sky Rise Above Silver Stars
Chicago Halts San Antonio's Winning Streak:
Before this weekend began, there were likely few that felt the Chicago Sky would fare too well going up against the top teams in both the East and the West. After a pair of stellar performances by Jia Perkins, though, the Sky look to be on the rise. On Saturday, Perkins scored 15 of her 17 in the final quarter to lead Chicago to a win over Indiana. Perkins, on Sunday, stepped up again as she scored a game-high 27 on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor to help the Sky to an 84-82 overtime win against San Antonio. Even with Perkins' great play versus the Silver Stars, it was Dominique Canty who stole the show. After struggling to find her shot for much of the game, Canty drained the game-winning jumper with just 6.3 seconds remaining on the clock in overtime. The win puts Chicago only a ½-game back of the final playoff spot in the East. For the Silver Stars, who entered the contest as winners of six straight, Sophia Young finished with 25 points, while Becky Hammon added 20 in the loss.

Hot Play Continues for Sun:
One of the hottest teams in the league, the Sun captured their sixth straight win on Sunday with an 81-79 triumph over the Comets. For the first time in six weeks, Connecticut moved above the .500 mark, now sitting at 12-11 on the season. In its win over Houston, Katie Douglas poured in 13 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to help her team escape with the victory. Douglas has averaged nearly 21 points per game during the Sun's recent streak. Asjha Jones continued her strong play as she added 22 points. Tamecka Dixon and Tina Thompson finished with 18 points apiece for the Comets.

“The minute it left I knew it was good. It was right on line. I know it's a cliché, but if you miss your last 10 (shots) you're going to make your next 10. You got to keep shooting. I'm glad I had the opportunity and I'm glad I made it.”
-- Seattle's Sue Bird on her game-winning shot against the Liberty on Sunday. Lauren Jackson and Iziane Castro Marques scored 23 apiece, but it was Bird who lifted the Storm to a 77-75 victory.

With two of the top scorers in the league on their squad, Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi, the Mercury usually don't need to look elsewhere for scoring. Against the Lynx on Sunday, though, Phoenix's top guns struggled and finished with only 22 points combined. Despite the down night by Taurasi and Pondexter, the Mercury cruised to a 106-93 win over Minnesota. Why? Because Penny Taylor put forth a dominant performance as she dropped 28 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out two assists. Her rebounding total is a new career high and she fell just five points shy of her career high in scoring. Seimone Augustus scored 23, but the Lynx lost for the ninth consecutive time to set a single-season franchise record.

On Sunday in New York, two players came up clutch down the stretch. Both Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird saw their team needed them and rose to the occasion. In a tight contest, Jackson scored eight of her 23 in the late stages of the Storm's 77-75 win over the Liberty. Jackson, who bruised her leg in the third quarter, also grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds. Bird, playing in her second game since returning to the lineup, struggled again from the field and hit only 1-of-7. The lone shot she made, though, was a three-point game-winner with 10 seconds left on the clock.
