Silver Stars Earn First-Ever Win Against Shock

Hammon, Riley Sit with Foot Sprains: Playing without two key starters, Erin Buescher and Vickie Johnson stepped up in a big way Sunday to help the Silver Stars snap a nine-game losing streak against the Shock. Buescher scored a season-high 23 points and had a career-high 16 rebounds and Johnson scored 12, including a clutch 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining, to help lift San Antonio to a 71-68 victory over the WNBA-leading Shock, despite playing without Becky Hammon and Ruth Riley. Detroit's Katie Smith, the reigning Eastern Conference Player of the Week, had an opportunity to tie the game with 5.7 seconds left but missed the second of two free throws. Riley, who played four seasons in Detroit and was the 2003 Finals MVP, joined Hammon on the sideline with a sprained foot.

Boucek, Laimbeer Named All-Star Head Coaches: It's not too often rookies are selected to All-Star Games -- especially rookie coaches. The Monarchs maintained their first-place lead in the West ahead of the Silver Stars with a 76-68 home triumph over the Lynx on Sunday. The win means that first-year head coach Jenny Boucek will lead the West on July 15 at the 2007 WNBA All-Star game in Washington. D.C. If the Monarchs had lost, San Antonio head coach Dan Hughes would have represented the West. Detroit's Bill Laimbeer will guide the East because WNBA guidelines state that the coach of the previous season's conference champion serves as the All-Star coach for that conference. The rules in the West changed for this season after John Whisenant resigned prior to the start of the season.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"We play fast all the time with a lot of fast breaks. That’s helped me because that's what my game is about."

-- Seattle's Iziane Castro Marques, after scoring 24 points in an 84-53 win over New York. The Storm outscored the Liberty 14-4 on fast-break points.

    COMING UP CLUTCH
In just her second season in the league, Chicago's Candice Dupree is already a superstar. She is averaging 19 points and seven boards and has the Sky on pace to make their first playoff appearance after a rough inaugural season. On Sunday, Dupree helped prove her superstar status by hitting a jumper with 9.6 seconds left to force overtime and finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 74-71 overtime win in Los Angeles.
    SHINING OFF THE BENCH
Standing 5-foot-7, Fever guard Tan White isn't known for her rebounding skills. In fact, she had never grabbed more than six rebounds in a game during her three-year career. But on Sunday, White was all over the boards, pulling in a career-high eight rebounds off the bench in Indiana's 69-62 win in Washington. White also contributed on the offensive end, posting 14 points, including 12 in the first half, and two assists as the Fever snapped the Mystics' three-game winning streak.
