Indiana Hands Detroit First Loss of Season

Fever Heat Up to Down Shock: Only one day after suffering its first home loss of the season to the Phoenix Mercury, the Fever bounced back quite nicely by routing previously unbeaten Detroit, 77-67, on Saturday. Led by Tamika Catchings' dominant performance -- 26 points, 14 rebounds and five steals -- Indiana trailed only in the opening minutes in this battle of the elites. Detroit used a 13-3 run in the third quarter to trim the lead to eight, but the Fever quickly regrouped and led by as much as 20 in the final quarter. Tammy Sutton-Brown added 17 points and seven rebounds as the Fever moved to 9-2 on the year. The defending champs, who now sit at 8-1, were without All-Star Cheryl Ford due to an injured knee. Deanna Nolan did her best to keep the Shock in the game, finishing with 14 points and five boards, while Katie Feenstra contributed 14 and 11. If Detroit would have escaped with the win, they would have matched the best start to a season in WNBA history. These two powerhouses will meet three more times this year.

Hammon Shines Against Former Team: After eight seasons and three All-Star appearances in the Big Apple, Becky Hammon was traded to the Silver Stars prior to the start of the 2007 season. A change of scenery has not affected her play, though, as the guard is the fifth-leading scorer in the league and leads in assists. On Saturday, playing against her former squad for the first time, Hammon scored a season-high 22 and dished out seven assists to help the Silver Stars roll to a 79-71 win over the Liberty. Sophia Young added 21 points in the victory. Jessica Davenport, who the Liberty selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft, which they received from San Antonio, finished with eight points and five boards.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"It's disappointing that we played this poorly today after barely getting out of here with a win last night. Not only did they outplay us, they outworked us, and that shouldn't be happening. We need to hold ourselves and each other responsible for this."

-- Detroit guard Katie Smith, after the Shock suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 77-67 decision to the Fever on Saturday.

    FILLING THE BOX SCORE
Entering Saturday's contest, Svetlana Abrosimova was averaging 4.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. However, in an 83-58 victory over the Sparks on Saturday, Abrosimova did a bit of everything for the Lynx. The guard out of Connecticut finished with 14 points, pulled down five rebounds, dished out six assists and recorded four steals in 28 minutes of action. The 14 points were one shy of her season high and the six assists matched her top mark for the season.
    COMING UP CLUTCH
Hampered by a sore thumb, Yolanda Griffith has gotten off to a slow start to the season, averaging only eight points and 4.6 rebounds per game thus far. On Saturday, though, the eight-year pro looked to be returning to her All-Star form as she led the Monarchs to a 75-63 win over the Comets. With her team trailing the winless Comets by four at the half, the 6-3 center scored seven of her 13 points in the third quarter to help the Monarchs grab a lead they would not relinquish. She also pulled down five boards and recorded two steals as Sacramento improved to 7-3. Chelsea Newton added 17 points and four steals in the win.
