Mercury Victorious in Sacramento
Monarchs' Home Winning Streak Ends:
The Mercury entered riding a three-game losing streak, while the Monarchs had won 12 consecutive regular-season games at home dating back to last season; both streaks ended on Saturday night as Phoenix upended Sacramento, 74-70. The Mercury began the fourth quarter with a nine-point lead, but Nicole Powell netted eight of her 10 points in the final 10 minutes to help the Monarchs crawl back. Sacramento nearly tied the game on a Chelsea Newton running jumper that came up just short with 1.9 seconds remaining on the clock. Phoenix's Kelly Miller grabbed the rebound and put the game out of reach by draining two free throws with 0.8 seconds left. Diana Taurasi finished with 26 points, dished out eight assists and pulled down six rebounds, while Cappie Pondexter scored 16 to help Phoenix to the victory. Rebekkah Brunson scored 17 and grabbed 17 boards in the defeat for Sacramento. The two teams currently sit atop the Western Conference standings and finish the season with back-to-back games against one another.

Things Looking Up for Sky:
After finishing the 2006 season with only five victories, the Chicago Sky seem to have righted the ship this year. With their convincing 70-60 victory over the Silver Stars on Saturday, Chicago has now won three of their last four contests and sit at 4-4 on the early season. The team did not post its fourth win last year until game No. 26. For the fifth time this season, Candice Dupree led the Sky in scoring, finishing with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Chasity Melvin added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Chicago will try to match its win total of a year ago when they host the Seattle Storm on Tuesday. All-Access Photos: Game Action | Behind the Scenes

“Just knowing that the season is not over. This wasn’t the last game. We have some time to improve. Hopefully we can improve at home these next few games before we head back out on the road. But it is very tough to stay positive when you’re 1-9, but we have to keep our heads up. We can’t put our heads down just yet because we still have a lot of games left. Hopefully we can make some things happen and make some runs.”
-- Lynx guard Seimone Augustus, after Saturday's 90-76 loss to the Storm on how the team stays positive.

Since joining the Sky via trade, Chasity Melvin has stepped in rather nicely with her new squad. Averaging nearly a double-double through six games with Chicago (12.2 ppg and 9.6 rpg), Melvin once again put her stamp on Saturday's contest. In the Sky's 70-60 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars, the eight-year veteran scored 17, grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked three shots and recorded three steals. The Sky were 0-2 prior to acquiring Melvin and are 4-2 with her in the lineup.

With her team riding a three-game losing streak, Lauren Jackson came up large for the Storm and almost single-handedly put an end to their skid. Jackson, who missed Seattle's last game due to an illness, finished with a double-double on Saturday in a 90-76 win over the Lynx. Jackson hit 12-of-15 from the floor to finish with 30 points and pulled down nine rebounds. With the game tied at 26 after the first quarter, Jackson scored 11 in the second quarter to help the Storm grab a nine-point halftime lead and never look back en route to the win.
