TAURASI SCORES 2,000TH CAREER POINT

Mercury Shoot Past Comets: Diana Taurasi took the court Friday knowing that with a single basket she would eclipse the 2,000-point plateau. However, after breaking that mark on a trey late in the first period, she must have decided to start making her way to 3,000 as quickly as possible. Taurasi exploded for 37 points and the Mercury crushed the Comets, 111-85, falling one point short of their franchise record. It was the tenth time in her three-year WNBA career that Taurasi scored at least 30. Tina Thompson scored 32 points and grabbed nine boards in the loss.

Truly a Shining Star: When San Antonio acquired Becky Hammon in a draft-day trade with the New York Liberty, it was hoping to get an impact player and face for its franchise for years to come. So far, the Silver Stars have to be extremely pleased with the results. Hammon poured in a team-high 21 points on Friday as San Antonio improved to 2-1 on the season with an 82-71 home win over the Storm. In her first three games with the Silver Stars, Hammon has led the team in scoring in each contest.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"I know they expect a lot of rebounds out of me even though I didn't really know the plays that much, but I know that's what they wanted me to do.”

    SHINING OFF THE BENCH
Although it may be early in the season to start judging how well offseason moves panned out, if the first few games are any indication, the Silver Stars made some amazing transactions. Along with making a draft-day trade for Becky Hammon, San Antonio signed free agent Erin Buescher from Sacramento. On Friday, Buescher provided a great spark off the bench as she went 7-of-10 from the field for 18 points to go along with four assists and five steals to push the Silver Stars past the Storm, 82-71. Teammate Shanna Crossley also shined off the pine as she finished with 14 points.
    COMING UP CLUTCH
After trading guard Monique Currie to the Washington Mystics on Thursday for Chasity Melvin, the Sky were hoping that the newly acquired center would add some size to their squad. On Friday, the eighth-year center made her precense felt, not only in stature, but with a few clutch plays as well. Melvin grabbed a pivotal rebound with 9.7 seconds left in regulation and drilled two free throws with 6.7 ticks remaining to end a late Lynx rally and give Chicago an 82-77 road victory over Minnesota. Candice Dupree did her part as she matched a career high with 25 points.
