McCoughtry, Taurasi Earn WNBA Players of the Month Presented by Samsung After Guiding Atlanta, Phoenix, to Top of Eastern and Western Conference Standings

NEW YORK, July 1, 2014 – Angel McCoughtry of the Atlanta Dream and Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month presented by Samsung, respectively, for games played in June.

The Eastern and Western Conference Player of the Month awards, as well as the WNBA Rookie of the Month, are presented by Samsung and are part of the larger WNBA Performance Awards presented by Samsung program. This marks the first season that Samsung, an official WNBA marketing partner, will present the WNBA’s highest individual honors, including the WNBA Most Valuable Player, WNBA Most Improved Player, WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, and WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.

McCoughtry scored 16 or more points in eight of Atlanta’s 10 games as the Dream posted an 8-2 record in June, finishing the month atop the Eastern Conference with an overall mark of 11-4. The sixth-year pro led the East in scoring (19.6 ppg, second in the league behind only Tulsa’s Skylar Diggins), while ranking third in the conference in assists (3.6 apg) and seventh in steals (2.4 spg). On June 23, McCoughtry earned her first Eastern Conference Player of the Week award of the season and the 12th such honor of her career.

Highlights of McCoughtry’s play in June included:
• June 7 vs. Chicago: Her 20-point, five-rebound, three-steal effort paced the Dream to a 97-59 win over the then-No. 1 ranked team in the East.
• June 13 vs. Minnesota: McCoughtry helped Atlanta topple another top-ranked team by pouring in a game-high 23 points while also contributing six rebounds and five assists in an 85-82 victory.
• June 18 vs. Washington: Posted 27 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in an 83-73 win.
• June 22 at New York: Recorded a double-double with 33 points and 10 boards in an 85-78 defeat at New York.
• June 29 at Indiana: Closed out the month with an all-around effort that included 20 points, four rebounds, four assists, and four steals in a 76-68 road win over Indiana.

Taurasi led her club to the top spot in the Western Conference as the Mercury posted an 8-2 record in June to improve its overall record to 11-3. For the month, the 11-year pro paced the WNBA in assists (6.9 apg) and ranked fourth among Western Conference players in scoring (18.7 ppg). In the process, Taurasi – a two-time WNBA champion and league MVP in 2009 – led Phoenix to consecutive wins over Minnesota, snapping a streak of 10 consecutive regular-season losses at the hands of the Lynx.

Highlights of Taurasi’s play in June included:
• June 3 vs. Seattle: Posted 20 points, seven assists, and four rebounds in an 87-72 win.
• June 15 at Minnesota: Taurasi’s double-double of 21 points and 11 assists was the catalyst for the visiting Mercury as Phoenix won the first half of a home-and-away series, 80-72.
• June 18 vs. Minnesota: Recorded another double-double, this one a 22-point, 10-rebound effort that also included six assists, propelling Phoenix to a 92-79 victory.
• June 20 vs. Tulsa: Tallied 14 points and 12 assists in a 91-80 win.
• June 27 at Indiana: Scored 23 points – including 11-of-11 from the free throw line – in an 81-76 victory as Phoenix logged its sixth win in seven games.
