Sparks Head Coach Brian Agler Signs Contract Extension

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 11, 2017) – The Los Angeles Sparks have re-signed Head Coach Brian Agler to a multi-year contract extension, as announced by Executive Vice President/General Manager Penny Toler.

“I am extremely excited that Head Coach Brian Agler will have a long future with the Sparks Organization.  As I stated back in 2015 when we first signed him, he is a proven winner and continues to demonstrate this repeatedly.   Not many organizations can say that they have a coach that has won four Championships in three different professional destinations (2 ABL Columbus Quest, 1 with Seattle Strom & 1 with the Sparks).  In addition to the players, Coach Agler is a huge piece of the Sparks success.  I look forward to working with him for years to come, said Toler.”

At the helm, Head Coach Brian Agler will lead the Los Angeles Sparks to the 2017 WNBA playoffs for the third consecutive season.  Coach Agler guided the Sparks to 26-8 record this season and currently holds a 66-36 coaching record with the team.  On June 6, 2017, Coach Agler won his 300th regular season career win as a head coach.

Coach Agler is the all-time winningest coach in women’s professional basketball history in the U.S. with 296 regular-season victories.  On January 5, 2015, Agler became the 12th head coach in Los Angeles Sparks history, bringing with him over 30 years of head-coaching experience, including 11 years in the WNBA.

In his first season with Los Angeles, Agler led the Sparks to a league-best 15th postseason appearance.  Just one year later he led them to a 26-8 regular season mark and the 2016 WNBA championship, the third league title in the franchise’s history.

“I’m very excited to continue to coach the LA Sparks.  I’ve appreciated working for the ownership group, led by five-time NBA Champion Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Mark Walter, Stan Kasten, Todd Boehly, Robert L. Patton Jr. and Eric Holoman.  Additionally, Penny Toler and I have a great working relationship which I’ve enjoyed and glad we are going to work together in the future.  Most importantly, I love how our team and its core group have grown together and the relationships and the winning culture that we have developed.  I am fortunate to be a part of this, said Los Angeles Sparks Head Coach Brian Agler.”

The Los Angeles Sparks, presented by EquiTrust Life Insurance, finished the regular season (26-8) and will play against the Phoenix Mercury in Game 1 of the WNBA Semi-Finals on Tuesday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m.  The game will take place at the Staples Center.
