San Antonio Stars Select Washington’s Kelsey Plum With No. 1 Pick in WNBA Draft

NEW YORK – The San Antonio Stars have selected University of Washington guard Kelsey Plum with the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft. Plum, the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history, becomes the first Washington player to be selected with the top pick in the WNBA Draft.

Finishing her career with an NCAA-record 3,527 points, Plum swept the National Player of the Year awards after scoring 1,109 points as a senior, also a new NCAA record. The 5-8 guard averaged 31.7 points per game in the 2016-17 season and 25.4 per game for her career, which featured a trio of NCAA Tournament appearances and Washington’s first-ever Final Four.

The native of Poway, Calif., also averaged 5.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists as a senior while shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 42.8 percent from the three-point line. Although they were knocked out in the Sweet Sixteen by eventual runner-up Mississippi State, Plum’s Huskies finished with a program-record 29 wins.

Coverage of the first round of the WNBA Draft from Samsung 837 in New York City continues on ESPN2. The second and third rounds will air on ESPNU starting at 8 p.m. ET, and coverage of the entire draft is also streaming on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
