Rookie Report: The First Month

The first month of WNBA regular season has come to a close and while Chiney Ogwumike was voted the Rookie of the Month, several other rookies like Shoni Schimmel, Natasha Howard, and Kayla McBride have also had standout success in the earliest stages of their careers. Here we check in with the Class of 2014 to see what the WNBA has dealt them so far.

CHINEY OGWUMIKE, CONNECTICUT SUN, FIRST OVERALL PICK

Chiney Ogwumike was voted Rookie of the Month for the month of May and for good reason. She leads all rookies by averaging 17.2 points per game and she also leads the league in total offensive rebounds with 28. Her best rebounding output was 15 on May 29.

Older sister Nneka was quick to congratulate her:

SHONI SCHIMMEL, ATLANTA DREAM, EIGHTH OVERALL PICK

Shoni Schimmel came out of Louisville with guns blazing, securing her place in WNBA history by matching the record for most assists in a player's first two WNBA games with 21. Schimmel is also averaging 9.6 points per game and a solid 6.7 assists (2nd in the league).

She has also made quite a splash in the community, bringing along with her thousands of fans who have followed her career ever since she left the reservation she grew up on in Oregon.

NATASHA HOWARD, INDIANA FEVER, FIFTH OVERALL PICK

Natasha Howard brought the heat early on when she tied the record for most blocks in a WNBA debut with six. Since then, she has been a presence for her Fever team, especially in Tamika Catchings's absence. Howard is averaging 12 points per game and 5.3 rebounds.

KAYLA McBRIDE, SAN ANTONIO STARS, THIRD OVERALL PICK

Kayla McBride was doing perfectly well for her rookie year, averaging about 10 points per game, but then she broke out with a 30-point game to beat her friend and former teammate Skylar Diggins and the Tulsa Shock. McBride is averaging 11.7 points per game.
