Race to MVP: July 7

With only a few days left to vote for your 2015 WNBA All-Stars, it’s no secret that Elena Delle Donne has been the best player in the WNBA so far. She’s scored more than 40 points twice. Her continued brilliance is why for the fourth straight week she’s our favorite to take home WNBA MVP honors.

1. Elena Delle Donne

Delle Donne continued to get whatever shot she wanted in Chicago’s three games last week. In that stretch she scored 26, 26 and 12, respectively, and added double-digit rebounds in all but one game. Her phenomenal free-throw streak came to an end against the Sun, but she’s still shooting an incredible 94 percent from the charity stripe for her career.

2. Maya Moore

After a slow shooting start, the reigning WNBA MVP has responded and helped lead the Minnesota Lynx to the top of the Western Conference. She’s undoubtedly the catalyst of a Minnesota team that is trying to reclaim the Western Conference throne in 2015. Moore scored 23 points and tallied 11 rebounds in the Lynx’s 82-57 rout of Seattle.

3. Angel McCoughtry

The Atlanta Dream have recovered from a slow start and are right in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff hunt, thanks in large part to the play of Angel McCoughtry. The two-time WNBA scoring champion is averaging 20.7 points per game, second only to Elena Delle Donne. She’s been the heartbeat of the Dream and will be vital to their success going forward.

4. Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner returned on June 27 and, well, suddenly things are going well Phoenix. They’re third in the Western Conference and Griner is already making an impact defensively, just as she did in 2014 when she was named WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. Through four games, Griner has 17 blocks. Yes, 17. She’s played four games and is already tied for third in the league in blocks.

5. Nneka Ogwumike

Griner isn’t the only major frontcourt player to make a return to the court in a big way. Nneka Ogwumike has helped spark Los Angeles to their first two wins of the season, and she’s done so in impressive fashion. The two-time All-Star scored 27 points and recorded eight rebounds in their first win against San Antonio, and she followed that up with a 19-point, 10-rebound performance in the win against Tulsa.

6. DeWanna Bonner

150615-Bonner-800
Bonner has been Phoenix’s most consistent scorer this season and only trails Angel McCoughtry and Elena Delle Donne in scoring average in 2015. Griner’s return should help take a bit of the scoring load off her shoulders, but the three-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year has shown before that she can continue to put up numbers like she has early in the season. She’s averaging 18.4 points and 6.5 rebounds through the first 11 games of 2015.

7. Alex Bentley

The Connecticut Sun faltered this past week for the first time this season, falling to 7-3 after two straight losses. They’re still the best in the Eastern Conference and they’ve been paced by the consistent play of guard Alex Bentley. The third-year pro out of Penn State is putting up career bests in points per game (17.1) and steals per game (3) and ranks second in the league overall in steals (30).

8. Emma Meesseman

150630-Meesseman-800
Emma Meesseman continues to be one of the league’s most efficient scorers, picking her spots and dominating opponents in a variety of ways on the offensive end of the floor. She’s averaging 14.9 points and 9 rebounds per game in her third year in the league and is part of a frontcourt duo with Stefanie Dolson that has made the Mystics one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

9. Tamika Catchings

150605_catchings_800-480
Tamika Catchings is in her second-to-last season in the WNBA — her 14th season overall — and she’s still one of the best talents in the league. Catchings scored 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting in Indiana’s win over Connecticut last week. She followed that up with a 15-point, 7 rebound, 5-assist performance in a win against the Mystics. The 2011 WNBA MVP has returned to form and is showing why she’ll go down as one of the best to ever play in this league.

10. Tina Charles

150605_charles_800-480
Tina Charles got back on track, as did the Liberty, and she’s back in the hunt for Most Valuable Player honors. The 2012 WNBA MVP helped the Liberty to two straight wins over Los Angeles and Chicago, respectively. She had 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists in New York’s win over the Sparks. Charles then scored 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting and added 11 rebounds and five assists in the win over the Sky.
