Jackson Named Player of the Week

NEW YORK, AUGUST 11 – Seattle Storm forward Lauren Jackson was named the WNBA Player of the Week for games played Monday, August 4 through Sunday, August 10.

The award is Jackson’s third of the season tying the league mark for most Player of the Week awards in a season originally set by the Los Angeles Sparks’ Lisa Leslie in 2000.

The number one overall pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft averaged 25.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.00 blocks, and 3.0 assists while shooting 25-of-40 (62.5%) from the field on the week. Jackson leads the league is scoring (21.2), is fourth in blocked shots (1.81), fifth in rebounding (8.5), seventh in field goal percentage (48.7%), and 16th in free throw percentage (83.1%).

The Storm had a perfect 2-0 week and is currently in sole possession of third place in the West, only two games behind Los Angeles for second and two-and-one-half games behind Houston for the top spot in the conference.

Jackson started off the week on August 6 by setting the WNBA record for made field goals in a game connecting on 17-of-23 shots for a Storm-record 34 points. She also grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out three assists, and had three blocked shots in the victory over Los Angeles. She followed that performance on August 8 by leading the Storm to a win over Minnesota with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks, three steals, and three assists. It was Jackson’s second double-double of the week and her sixth in a row.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte’s Dawn Staley, Cleveland’s Chasity Melvin, Connecticut’s Nykesha Sales, Detroit’s Swin Cash, Houston’s Sheryl Swoopes, Minnesota’s Katie Smith, New York’s Tari Phillips, Phoenix’s Plenette Pierson, Sacramento’s DeMya Walker, and San Antonio’s Adrienne Goodson.
