Honor is second for Catchings this season

NEW YORK, Aug. 12 -- Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings, who averaged 25.3 points and 10.3 rebounds while leading Indiana to three victories, was named the WNBA Player of the Week for games played Monday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 11.

Catchings earned her second player of the week honors of the season as Indiana kept its playoff dreams alive with key victories against Washington, Orlando and Miami. The rookie played all 40 minutes in three consecutive games to start the week, becoming the first player in Fever history to record three straight double-doubles. She scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 64-55 victory against the Mystics on June 6, and matched her career high with 32 points to go along with 12 rebounds in a 70-63 triumph over the Miracle on August 7.

The rookie capped the week with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a 77-63 victory against the Sol on Aug. 11. Catchings currently leads the WNBA in steals (2.97 steals per game), is second overall in scoring (18.9 points per game) and ranks fourth in rebounding (8.7 rebounds per game).

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte’s Allison Feaster, Detroit’s Elaine Powell, Houston’s Sheryl Swoopes, Los Angeles’ Mwadi Mabika, New York’s Tari Phillips, Orlando’s Katie Douglas, Phoenix’s Gordana Grubin, Portland’s Jackie Stiles, Seattle’s Lauren Jackson and Washington’s Chamique Holdsclaw.
