Connecticut's Tina Charles and Los Angeles' Candace Parker Named WNBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month Presented by Boost Mobile

NEW YORK, July 17, 2012 -- Tina Charles of the Connecticut Sun and Candace Parker of the of the Los Angeles Sparks, were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month presented by Boost Mobile, respectively, for games played through July 13, when the league officially began its break for the 2012 Olympic Games.

This marks the first season that Boost Mobile – the leaguewide marquee partner of the WNBA – has presented the WNBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week awards.

For Charles, the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month presented by Boost Mobile award is her second straight award. In leading the Sun to a 5-1 record in July, Charles paced the conference in rebounds (11.2 rpg), was second in minutes (35.7 mpg), and fourth in scoring (19.0 ppg). The 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year and 2011 All-WNBA First Team selection recorded a double-double in four-of-six contests, scoring at least 19 points three times and pulling down at least 13 rebounds an equal number of times. She also helped Connecticut reach the break with 15-4 record, tied with the Minnesota Lynx for the best overall mark in the league..

Highlights of Charles’ month included:

  • Earned back-to-back WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week presented by Boost Mobile honors.
  • In her final game before the break, recorded her 12th double-double of the season as the Sun earned its fifth straight win behind Charles’ 25 points and 13 boards at Chicago. Tallied 12 points and eight boards in the second half, rallying Connecticut from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit for an 80-78 victory.
  • Scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in an 86-75 win over Tulsa on July 6.
  • On the strength of her fourth straight double-double, helped the Sun hand Minnesota its first home loss of the season. Her 19-point, 15-rebound effort keyed the 86-80 win July 7.

    Parker, who also earned Western Conference Player of the Month presented by Boost Mobile honors in May and June, helped the Sparks to a 5-0 mark in July while leading the league in rebounds (12.0 rpg) and blocks (2.2 bpg), and ranking sixth in scoring (20.0 ppg). En route to claiming the July honor, Parker, the 2008 league MVP and Rookie of the Year, helped Los Angeles improve to 15-6 overall, third best in the tightly contested Western Conference.

    Highlights of Parker’s month included:

  • Notched four double-doubles.
  • Opened the month with 28 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and a pair of assists in a 96-90 win over Minnesota on July 5.
  • Recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 22 points and 14 boards (including 11 on the defensive end), and three blocks in a 90-71 road win at Phoenix on July 10.
  • Recorded 17 points, 14 rebounds, and three steals en route to an 83-59 decision over Seattle on July 7.
  • Closed out her July performance with 19 points, four blocks and seven boards in a 77-74 road win over Eastern Conference contender Indiana on July 12.

    The WNBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month presented by Boost Mobile are part of a series of on-court performance awards called the WNBA Performance Awards presented by Boost Mobile. The series, currently in its first season, also includes the WNBA Players of the Week presented by Boost Mobile and four of the WNBA's most prestigious year-end honors: WNBA Most Valuable Player presented by Boost Mobile, WNBA Defensive Player of the Year presented by Boost Mobile, WNBA Sixth Woman presented by Boost Mobile, and WNBA Most Improved Player presented by Boost Mobile.
