Chicago's Fowles and L.A.'s Parker Named WNBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month
NEW YORK, August 1, 2013 -- Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky and Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks were named the WNBAs Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month, respectively, for games played in July.
Fowles scored in double figures in each of her five games in July, helping Eastern Conference leader Chicago (12-5) to a 4-1 mark for the month. She averaged 17.2 points and 10.8 rebounds, while her .660 field goal percentage and 2.2 bpg led the WNBA. Fowles was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on July 14.
Highlights of Fowles WNBA action in July included:
July 10 vs. Washington: Double-double with 26 points (12-for-17 shooting) and 18 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass, in an 89-85 win.
July 20 vs. New York: Double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds in an 80-69 win.
July 24 at Washington: 21 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in an 82-78 loss.
Parkers 19.8 ppg and 9.0 rpg in July led Los Angeles (12-6) to a 7-2 record for the month after a 5-4 start to the season. Her 178 total points were also a conference best, while her 12 blocks led the league. Parker scored at least 20 points in six of her teams nine games and averaged 23.2 points over two weeks (five games) to earn back-to-back Western Conference Player of the Week awards.
Highlights of Parkers month included:
July 2 vs. Minnesota: 27 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 96-66 win.
July 11 at Tulsa: A personal season-best 30 points to go with eight rebounds in a 94-78 win. Also tied a 2013 league-high with 14 made field goals.
July 18 vs. Phoenix: Double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds in a 90-84 loss.
July 25 vs. Seattle: Double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 73-66 loss. Her 14 made free-throws was a single-game career high.
