Point Guard Erica Wheeler Re-Signs With Fever

INDIANAPOLIS — Point guard Erica Wheeler has re-signed with the Indiana Fever, returning to Indianapolis for what will be her fourth WNBA season.

An undrafted free agent when she entered the league in 2015, Wheeler has completed three WNBA seasons, the last two with Indiana, and become a staple in the Fever lineup.

The 2017 campaign was a breakout year for Wheeler. She was second on the team in scoring and tops in assists while averaging 11.8 points and 4.1 assists per game. Appearing in every game with 26 starts, she eclipsed 20 points five times and reached double-figure scoring on 18 occasions. Her career scoring high of 33 points came at Madison Square Garden against New York last August while shooting 12-of-18 overall and 7-of-11 from 3-point range. She tied the franchise mark for 3 FGs in a game and matched the second-highest scoring night in club history.

“Erica has continued to grow her game and was a key contributor to our team last year,” said Fever Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. “She brings an infectious enthusiasm, works tirelessly and is a great teammate. I am confident she will be even more productive moving forward.”

Wheeler entered the league with stints in Atlanta and New York during a 2015 rookie season. Following her college career at Rutgers, Wheeler played professionally briefly in Puerto Rico and Brazil before earning her opportunity in the WNBA. She was invited to Indiana’s training camp prior to the 2016 season and she has emerged as one of the team’s most regular players the past two seasons.
