New York Liberty Sign Nine-Year Veteran Marissa Coleman

NEW YORK, NY – May 1, 2018 – The New York Liberty announced today it has signed nine-year WNBA veteran, guard-forward Marissa Coleman.

Coleman comes to the Liberty following a four-year stint with Indiana spanning from 2014-17. The former WNBA All-Star’s resume also includes tenures with Los Angeles (2012-13) and Washington (2009-2011). The Mystics drafted the University of Maryland National Champion 2nd Overall in the 2009 WNBA Draft.

“Marissa Coleman will bring experience and leadership, in addition to familiarity with our players and our staff,” said Liberty Head Coach Katie Smith. “She’s skilled, has good size, can shoot it, post up and will give us some versatility. Her size will allow her to get on the floor at certain times and allow us to play with lineups-scoring lineups, small lineups-both for our offensive purposes but also to match up with teams on the defensive end. We’re really looking for her to make an impact in a variety of ways and I know she’s excited.”

Last season, Coleman averaged 4.9 ppg reaching double-figures on four separate occasions. She became the 11th player to score 1,000 career points in a Fever uniform at Chicago, June, 28, and eclipsed the 2,000-point mark of her career at Connecticut, July, 30.

In 2016, Coleman tallied 8.3 ppg, mirroring a season-high of 19 points twice, once against New York on September 1. Of her 32 games played, she collected 21 starts. Her 2.0 apg marked her best effort.

During her second season in Indy, Coleman was the lone player to earn starts in each contest (34). She dropped a career-best 10.4 ppg complimented by 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest. On the defensive end, her 42 steals nabbed a personal high slotting her 11th in the WNBA with 1.24 spg. She was elected to her first All-Star Game netting six points for the East. Her first season with the Fever saw her average a then-career-high 8.9 points with 3.3 rebounds.

In three seasons with the Mystics, Coleman averaged 7.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg and 1.2 apg on .374 shooting. As a member of the Sparks, she posted averages of 3.9 ppg and 2.75 rpg.

The 2018 New York Liberty season tips off at Wintrust Arena on Sunday, May 20, against the Chicago Sky. The Liberty opens their doors to the Westchester County Center, Friday, May 25 against the Minnesota Lynx.
