On stage Thursday night at Mohegan Sun Arena, the WNBA’s draftees weren’t just shaking hands or hugging new WNBA President Lisa Borders when they walked on stage after hearing their names called. They were giving her a pound and showing off the signature “W” sign.
Known for the energy she brought to the sideline as a former Atlanta Dream season ticket holder, Borders brought her charisma to a new platform. The Draft was Borders’ coming-out party, too — her first major public appearance since starting the job on March 21.
“She can dap!” said forward Chiney Ogwumike of the host Connecticut Sun. “I was like, ‘What is this? It’s gotta be a W for the W.'”
“She’s the best,” Ogwumike added. “People remember her as the crazy fan on the side of the Atlanta Dream, but at the same time that just shows her passion. She knows every player in the league, she knows what we need to grow. So I think we’re only going forward with Lisa. There are not many leaders that are so articulate, so passionate, so excited about the future of the game. She was the perfect choice.”
Before the Draft, Borders held a press conference to answer many of the questions facing the league heading into its landmark 20th season:
