Maya Gets One Moore, Catchings Can't Be Caught; All-Star Named WNBA Players of the Month Presented by Samsung
NEW YORK, Aug. 19, 2014 Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx and Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever were named the WNBAs Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Month presented by Samsung, respectively, for games played in August.
The Player of the Month awards, as well as the WNBA Rookie of the Month, are presented by Samsung and are part of the larger WNBA Performance Awards presented by Samsung program. This marks the first season that Samsung, an official WNBA marketing partner, will present the WNBAs highest individual honors, including the WNBA Most Valuable Player, WNBA Most Improved Player, WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, and WNBA Rookie of the Year.
For Moore, the Western Conference Player of the Month presented by Samsung is her third of the season and the fifth of her career. She has now captured five of the past six such honors dating back to 2013.
For the month of August, Moore placed second in the league in scoring (23.0 ppg). Among Western Conference players, she ranked fourth in free throw percentage, (.917, 33-of-36), tied for fourth in blocks (0.86 bpg), fifth in steals (1.43 spg), seventh in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and 10th in assists (3.1 apg).
The 6-0 forward continued her hot shooting, scoring 20 or more points in four of Minnesotas seven games in August, including two contests of 30 or more points. Moore posted 40 points in a win against Tulsa on Aug. 2, marking her second 40-plus-point game this season, just shy of Diana Taurasis career record of three. In the matchup against the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 9, Moore scored 30 points, extending her WNBA record for 30-plus-point games in a season to 12.
Additional highlights of Moores play in August included:
-- Aug. 5 at Indiana: 15 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals in a 66-64 win
-- Aug. 7 vs. Chicago: 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block in a 74-64 victory
-- Aug. 12 vs. Los Angeles: 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal in a 63-71 loss
-- Aug. 15 at San Antonio: 20 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 76-92 loss
-- Aug. 16 vs. Tulsa: 19 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two blocks in a 80-63 win
For Catchings, a 13-year veteran, the Eastern Conference Player of the Month presented by Samsung is her first of the season and the third of her career.
During August, Catchings led the East in scoring (16.7 ppg), while ranking seventh in the conference in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and sixth in steals (1.67 spg). Catchings led the Fever to a 3-4 record in August, securing Indianas spot in the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season.
In a Aug. 10 meeting versus New York, the 6-1 forward scored 29 points and added four assists en route to a 90-76 victory. Four days later, Catchings posted 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals in a rematch against the Liberty. In her final action of the regular season, Catchings tallied 25 points and nine rebounds, helping Indiana to a 71-67 win against Chicago on Aug. 16.
