Fever Ready For Tough Road Test In Game 1

MINNEAPOLIS – The Fever are no strangers to hostile environments. They staved off elimination and moved on to the Eastern Conference Finals with a win on the road against the Chicago Sky. And with their backs against the wall, Marissa Coleman and the Fever silenced the Madison Square Garden crowd and clinched a spot in these WNBA Finals 2015 presented by Boost Mobile.

So don’t think for a second that the sure-to-be-loud crowd inside the Target Center will intimidate them. If anything, they’ve proven that it only intensifies their play.

“I talked about that being in Madison Square Garden and how loud it was with the fans,” said the Fever’s indomitable leader Tamika Catchings. “It’s a fun environment. And I think when you look at the WNBA Finals and the kind of atmosphere, that’s the atmosphere that you want to play in.”

Wait, fun? Yes, fun. The Fever seem to feed off of these types of environments, and they’ve shown all season long that they aren’t afraid of the moment.

“Even though they’re rooting against us,” Fever guard Briann January said, “that energy, that excitement that everybody has just from being here heightens the intensity.”

But the atmosphere inside the Target Center Sunday afternoon is sure to be unlike anything the Fever have faced all postseason. It’s Game 1 with a WNBA title on the line. And although this isn’t necessarily uncharted territory for many of the Fever’s core – who knocked off the Lynx in the WNBA Finals in 2012 under similar circumstances – it’s still going to be a heavy task staying together on the road.

“I think, for us,” Catchings said, “just making sure we keep our huddles tight when [Coach White] is talking in our timeouts. Making sure everybody’s close and we’re all on the same page. Making sure nobody’s looking around and everybody just stays engaged.”

“When things get tough when you’re in hostile environments,” added January,  “it’s just about really coming together and finding that within each other, and that confidence with each other on our bench and the people out there on the court.”
