Augustus
TODAY'S TOP STORY
Rookie Seimone Augustus continued her stellar play on Wednesday, but her teammates picked up the pace as the Lynx grabbed their first win of the 2006 season in convincing fashion, 114-71 vs. the Sparks. Augustus, the first overall pick out of LSU, hit 4-of-5 threes and led Minnesota in scoring for the fourth straight game with a season-high 26, but that was only part of the story. Svetlana Abrosimova sank all five of her 3-point attempts en route to 21 points, Kristen Mann also shot 4-of-5 from downtown, and the Lynx set a WNBA record in points (114), tied the league record for trifectas (15) and had the largest win margin (43) since 1998.

ALSO MAKING HEADLINES ...
Catchings Out: All-Star Tamika Catchings didn't get off to a torrid start, but that didn't prevent her Fever from jumping out to a 4-0 record. But with the 2005 Defensive Player of the Year sitting out in Houston on Wednesday due to an arch sprain in her right foot, Indiana became the last team to take its first loss, dropping a 73-60 decision to the Comets. Catchings had played in 138 straight games, a streak that lasted almost five full years.

Whitmore

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"We tried to shut down Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson and make somebody else beat us. Dominique Canty did a very good job of stepping up for her team."

-- Indiana forward Tamika Whitmore on the play of Houston guard Dominique Canty, who scored 24 in a 73-60 Comets win.

Pondexter
ROOKIE WATCH
On a night where the No. 1 pick led an offensive explosion, the second overall selection had her best game yet as well. Cappie Pondexter, a rookie guard out of Rutgers, racked up 26 points and 10 rebounds, but the Mercury fell to 0-3 with an 82-76 home defeat at the hands of the Silver Stars.

Jackson
FILLING THE BOX SCORE
In a battle between the last two WNBA champions, the Monarchs got the better of the Storm, but you can't blame Lauren Jackson for that. The former MVP hit 6-of-9 from the field for 20 points and added eight rebounds, but Sacramento came away with an 87-66 home win.
