Twice as Nice: Chiney Ogwumike Earns Second Straight Rookie of the Month Presented by Samsung

NEW YORK, July 1, 2014 – Chiney Ogwumike of the Connecticut Sun was named the WNBA’s Rookie of the Month presented by Samsung for games played in June. This is her second consecutive Rookie of the Month presented by Samsung honor.

The Eastern and Western Conference Player of the Month awards, as well as the WNBA Rookie of the Month, are presented by Samsung and part of the larger WNBA Performance Awards presented by Samsung program. This marks the first season that Samsung, an official WNBA marketing partner, will present the WNBA’s highest individual honors, including the WNBA Most Valuable Player, WNBA Most Improved Player, WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, and WNBA Defensive Player of the Year.

For the month of June, the University of Stanford graduate led all rookies in points (15.7 ppg) and rebounds (8.0 rpg), while placing second in minutes (29.0 mpg). Overall, she ranked second in the league in offensive rebounds per game (3.7), third in field goal percentage (.593), and finished in the top 10 in rebounds. On June 1, Ogwumike contributed a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) in an 85-76 win over the Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta Dream. To finish out the month, she scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in a 67-65 loss to the New York Liberty.

The first-year forward helped lead the Sun to a 7-3 record for the month and an overall record of 8-8, moving Connecticut into second place in the East. For the season, Ogwumike ranks second in the league in double-doubles (6), while placing in the top 10 in scoring (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg). She has posted double digits in scoring in all 15 games played this season.

Highlights of Ogwumike’s month included:
• June 1 vs. Atlanta: Posted a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) on 7-of-11 shooting from the field in a 85-76 win.
• June 13 vs. New York: Scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line in a 83-75 victory.
• June 29 vs. New York: Recorded a career high in rebounds (17) to go along with 22 points in a 67-65 loss.
