Charles, Jones, Taurasi, Parker, Moore, and Fowles on All-Star Weekend

Tina Charles, Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker, Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles and Jonquel Jones joined a teleconference ahead of Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game. Here’s what the stars had to say about the weekend.

“For me it’s about the camaraderie. To me it’s not about the game but being around players I’m not usually in the locker room with and knowing how they prepare, what gets them going and see them in that atmosphere without the pressure of winning a game. You know, being on the East team of course I want to say that we’re looking to win but it’s just the camaraderie to be around individuals and I have a couple of UConn players on my team so just being able to link back up with Tiffany Hayes.”

– Tina Charles on what she’s most excited for this weekend.

“There’s a lot of the same feelings where once you get here in the locker room with the best players in the league and a lot of them now who played on national teams together on overseas teams together, went to college with Sue, we just have so many memories now so when we get together, it’s almost like a reunion of sorts. I’m just as excited, it’s the first time in Seattle, really this place has had so many great teams and their fan base has been amazing that I think it’s going to be a special day tomorrow for the city of Seattle and the Storm really.”

– Diana Taurasi on All-Star weekend.

“We’ll see how I feel when I wake up. My base I’ve built was big enough to do that but if given the opportunity and I feel right, of course, but if I was betting I’d say I’ll probably be a passer and a facilitator.”

– Candace Parker on whether or not she will dunk in the All-Star game tomorrow – don’t count her out!

“Well I’ve just become a fan. When you’re competing you can’t really appreciate the other team because you’re mad they’re doing it against you. But when they are on our team, it’s like you can appreciate the versatility, the skill, the talent. I remember playing with Nneka the first time in the World Championships in 2014 and I was going crazy. I was her biggest cheerleader on the bench when I was out and she was in. It’s just really appreciating their talents.”

– Maya Moore on playing with Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker of Western rival LA Sparks.

“We have a lot of first timers on the East, but for the West we have Chelsea and Breanna. I don’t count Stewie. Stewie is one of those players where you just feel like she’s been around for a long time and then you look up and you’re like… you’re 22? What? You’re supposed to be older. She’s like the new me, where I was the young one coming up and now she’s in my place. I played with Stewie at the Olympics so Chelsea is the only one left. Process of elimination. I’m happy to get some dimes from her instead of her dropping dimes on us.”

– Sylvia Fowles on which first-time All-Star she’s looking to play alongside this weekend.

“You watch them play in college, Tina Charles especially, they dominated at the college level. We watched them win gold medals with the Olympic team. Just to be here with them- I feel like a little kid in a candy store just so excited to be here. I’m trying to take advantage of every opportunity and learn a little bit from them if they allow me to. Tina is just so gracious and generous, it’s easy to open up to them and talk to them. I’m just excited.”

– Jonquel Jones on playing in the All-Star Game with the veterans she’s looked up to.
