NEW YORK, Aug. 2, 2010
– Continuing an effort that has raised more than $2.5 million for breast health awareness, WNBA Breast Health Awareness Week returns from Aug. 3 to 10 to generate awareness about breast cancer and raise funds to help fight the disease.
Four nationally televised WNBA games will feature special programming on the league’s breast health initiative and awareness efforts. Highlights will include pink-and-white uniforms worn by the home team, coaches wearing pink ties or scarves, the referees using pink whistles, and the official WNBA Breast Health Awareness logo displayed on the court. The following games will each air on ESPN2:
Washington Mystics vs. the Atlanta Dream, 7:30 p.m. ET, Aug. 3
Connecticut Sun vs. the Seattle Storm, 10:30 p.m. ET, Aug. 5
Minnesota Lynx vs. the Chicago Sky, 3:00 p.m. ET, Aug. 7
Indiana Fever vs. the Los Angeles Sparks, 10:00 p.m. ET, Aug. 10
The league will raise money through the annual WNBA Breast Health Auction, which will include pink-and-white autographed basketballs donated by all 12 teams and the pink-and-white uniforms worn by the home team during televised games. The auction will launch Aug. 3 on WNBA.com, with proceeds benefiting the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation. Yow was North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, who battled breast cancer for many years before succumbing to the disease in January 2009.
As part of the weeklong series of events, all WNBA teams will host an in-arena Breast Health Awareness Night featuring special programming, including halftime presentations to honor local cancer survivors, live auctions, and the distribution of educational materials in partnership with local breast cancer organizations. Teams are also hosting a variety of community events in an effort to generate additional awareness about breast cancer.
The WNBA will use its various assets to communicate the breast health message, including a special public service announcement that will run on the scoreboard and in-arena public announcements. WNBA.com will provide a special section for the auction, which will include daily content and editorial pieces on breast health and a feature called Her Story that will include stories from WNBA players and fans of how breast cancer has impacted their lives.
