Becky Hammon Coaching With Spurs’ Summer League Team

WNBA legend Becky Hammon, who made headlines last August when she became the first female to be named a full-time NBA assistant coach, has no time for the status quo.

On July 3, Hammon broke through the glass ceiling yet again when she was named head coach of the San Antonio Spurs’ Las Vegas NBA Summer League squad. She’ll be the first female to hold that title when the event tips off July 10.

“I’m still seeing what kind of head coach I’m going to be,” Hammon told reporters last week in San Antonio.

If she’s learned anything from Gregg Popovich, the iconic Spurs head coach who she joined on the bench during her first season with the team, she’ll be just fine.

“I’m just thankful that [Popovich] trusted me enough to give me this opportunity, because it is a big opportunity,” Hammon told the Associated Press.

Under Popovich, Hammon helped lead the Spurs to a 55-27 record and a playoff berth last season.

A fiery and fearless floor general, Hammon averaged 13.0 points per game in 16 WNBA seasons for the New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars before retiring after the 2014 season.

“It’s funny because I’ve never really coached, but yet I’ve been coaching my whole career,” Hammon, a six-time WNBA All-Star, told the Associated Press. “It’s an interesting mix for me.”

UPDATE: Before Hammon makes history as a head coach with the Spurs Summer League team, Hammon will serve as an assistant during San Antonio’s run through the Utah Summer League. In her first Utah Summer League game, Hammon helped coach the Spurs to a 74-71 win over Jahlil Okafor and the Philadelphia 76ers. She will remain an assistant coach until the Las Vegas Summer League kicks off July 10.
