Australia Postgame Quotes

Lauren Jackson

Q: How do you feel?
Jackson: I'm euphoric right now. I can't believe it.

Q: What's the party going to be like tonight in Aubrey (Australia, Lauren's home town)?
Jackson: It's going to be a breakfast party and half of the town is going over for champagne breakfast at my parent's house. Put a sausage on the Barbie, I guess.

Q: How meaningful is this championship to you personally, as captain of the team, and the fact that your mom was captain of this team?
Jackson: Yes, everything that led up to this. And then looking up into the stands and seeing Robin Maybrey, who's probably the greatest captain ever of the Australian team. I broke down. And Tom Maher, the greatest coach ever of the Australian team. I can't even begin to explain how important it is to all the people who have been involved in our program, and built it to where it is today. I can't believe that we won. I can't believe we have the gold medal.

Q: You've been climbing this ladder since you were fifteen, playing with the national team. Is it incredible to reach the top?
Jackson: It is. I don't think it?s even sunk in yet. I know when we get home and the reception we'll have when we get to the airport, it'll just be phenomenal. I mean, the Americans are great and they're wonderful and everything, but this is our year, and our time to shine, and I think that we're really going to make the most of it.

Q: Talk about the performance of tournament MVP Penny Taylor.
Jackson: Oh my god, she was just a stud. Penny is a superstar on a superstar team, in America with Phoenix, and she was just everything we needed to win the game. I'm so happy that she was there, obviously. I'm just so happy that we won.

Q: How great is it to win a championship with this group of women?
Jackson: You know, I've thought about that a lot over the last few weeks, since the WNBA season ended and getting back with the Australian national team. Getting back with my friends and getting back with the Australian people, and our way of living and smiling and laughing, it's so different from being in America, and for me it's so much better because I'm Australian. So, everything about this team makes this gold medal perfect. We've had so much fun and we've really gelled. We haven't had that much time together. Our first game was against America in North Carolina on Sept. 7th. I don't know, I'm just so proud to be part of this team and to be the captain again.

Penny Taylor

Q: How incredible is this feeling?
Taylor: It's unlike anything I've ever felt before. I mean, we're the gold medalists of the world championship. It's just thrilling. It's what I've worked for since I was four years old, and I'm going to start crying if I talk about it some more?.

Q: Why four years old?
Taylor: I started playing when I was four, and I'm a person who always looks to be the best I can possibly be, and this is the best moment of my life.

Q: Did you ever dream you'd be the MVP of the World Championship tournament? Is it surreal?
Taylor: Yeah. That's nothing I ever dreamed about, but it's a great bonus. The gold is what I wanted, and on top of that, to be the MVP is great.

Q: How much does this championship mean to Australian basketball?
Taylor: This is history making for us. This is what we've worked for, in our development programs, which most of our players went through. This is a great boost that everyone involved in basketball in Australia.

Q: This team seems exceptionally close.
Taylor: Yeah, these are my best friends. We get along so well. They're all incredible basketball players but they're incredible people as well, so it's just an honor.
