Atlanta's Hayes, Dallas’ Cambage Named WNBA Players Of The Week


NEW YORK, July 23, 2018 – Tiffany Hayes of the Atlanta Dream and Liz Cambage of the Dallas Wings today were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played July 16-22.

Hayes was selected Player of the Week for the second time this season and the second time in her seven-year career. Behind Hayes, Atlanta went 3-0 last week to extend its winning streak to seven games and move into second place in the WNBA standings. She ranked second in the Eastern Conference in scoring (18.0 ppg) to go with 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

The highlight of the week for the 5-10 guard came on July 17, when she made a game-winning, buzzer-beating half-court shot to complete an 18-point effort as Atlanta defeated the host Connecticut Sun 86-83. Two days later, she scored 20 points in an 82-68 home win over the New York Liberty. Hayes finished the week with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds in an 87-74 home victory against the league-leading Seattle Storm on July 22.

For Cambage, the Player of the Week honor is the fourth of her career and second this season. Cambage led the Wings to a 2-2 mark as Dallas ended the week with a 14-11 record. The 6-8 center from Australia averaged a WNBA-high 34.0 points and a Western Conference-leading 2.25 blocked shots. Among West players, Cambage ranked second in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (62.2, 46-of-74) and was tied for seventh in assists (4.0 apg).

Cambage opened the week by scoring a WNBA single-game record 53 points to go with 10 rebounds and five blocks as Dallas defeated the visiting Liberty 104-87 on July 17. Two days later, she tallied game highs of 35 points and 17 rebounds and added four assists in a 90-81 home win over the Washington Mystics. Cambage’s two-game total of 88 points also set a WNBA record. On July 20, she finished with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks in a 114-99 road loss to the Chicago Sky. Cambage closed the week with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as the Wings fell to the visiting Sun 92-75 on July 22.

Other candidates for the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Atlanta’s Elizabeth Williams, Chicago’s Courtney Vandersloot, the Las Vegas Aces’ Kayla McBride and A’ja Wilson, the Los Angeles Sparks’ Candace Parker, the Minnesota Lynx’s Maya Moore, Seattle’s Breanna Stewart and Washington’s Elena Delle Donne.
