NEW YORK, Jan. 8, 2002 -- The date for the 2002 WNBA All-Star Game has been set for July 15, as the stars from the Eastern and Western Conferences get set to square off in the nation's capital. The Washington Mystics will host the event at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., and the game will again be televised nationally on ESPN beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Tickets will go on sale June 1 through the MCI Center Box Office. Tickets will be available for purchase through all Ticketmaster outlets beginning June 3. Click here for more information. The WNBA All-Star 2002 festivities will feature Summer Jam on July 14-15, the ultimate interactive basketball experience for fans of all ages, with WNBA players and various entertainers appearing throughout the two-day event. The location of Summer Jam will be announced at a later date.

This will mark the league's fourth All-Star event. The 2001 All-Star Game was hosted by the Orlando Miracle at the TD Waterhouse Centre, when the Western Conference All-Stars claimed their third victory with an 80-72 defeat of the Eastern Conference squad. Los Angeles Sparks center Lisa Leslie earned Most Valuable Player honors for the second time.

The Phoenix Mercury hosted the 2000 WNBA All-Star Game at America West Arena, as the West defeated the East 73-61 and Tina Thompson of the Houston Comets was named MVP. The Inaugural WNBA All-Star Game was hosted by the New York Liberty in 1999 at Madison Square Garden. Leslie was named MVP after leading the West to a 79-61 victory over the East.

The WNBA concluded the 2001 season by crowning a new champion - the Los Angeles Sparks - and recording the 10 millionth fan to attend a game since the league's inception. More than 2.5 million fans attended WNBA games last season, the most ever, and for the fifth straight season, WNBA regular season attendance averaged over 9,000 fans. Traffic to WNBA.com increased by 46 percent during the regular season and the site attracted over 1,000,000 visits - a record - during the postseason. In 2001, the league's combined local, national and international television coverage reached nearly 60 million fans in 23 different languages and 167 countries.
