Storm's Agler Named Head Coach of WNBA Squad for WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun

NEW YORK, June 27, 2010 – Head coach Brian Agler, whose Seattle Storm has raced to a 13-2 start, the best mark in the WNBA, has been named head coach for the team of WNBA stars that will face the USA National Team in the WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun, the league announced today.

The USA National Team, comprised of players from the USA National Team Pool, is coached by Geno Auriemma, University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball Coach. His assistants are Jennifer Gillom (head coach, Los Angeles Sparks) and Marynell Meadors (head coach, Atlanta Dream).

The Connecticut Sun will host The Stars at the Sun, which will showcase the world’s best female basketball players under one roof on Saturday, July 10. ESPN will televise the event nationally at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The league determined the WNBA team’s head coach based upon the club with the best winning percentage through July 1. By virtue of the Storm's 83-72 win over Tulsa today that improved Seattle's record to 13-2 (.867), Agler has secured that honor. Nancy Darsch, the lead assistant under Agler with the Storm, will serve in the same capacity with the WNBA team.

Participating players were determined through the "WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun" Balloting presented by T-Mobile USA program. Fans voted for the top 10 players in the WNBA, regardless of conference or position. The league will unveiled those players June 29, and each of them is guaranteed a position on the team rosters. Unlike previous years, the players selected by fans will not necessarily be starters. Any player voted in who is already in the USA National Team Pool will play on the USA Basketball team. The remaining players voted in by the fans will play on the WNBA team.

The USA National Team will fill out its roster by selecting players from within the National Pool. Following that, a vote by the league’s head coaches will determine the remaining players on the WNBA squad.
