Postgame Quotes: Mystics vs. Sun

Washington Mystics Head Coach Trudi Lacey

What was the biggest difference in the game?
“We had some mental lapses in the third quarter that allowed them to build a lead. To our credit, we changed defenses and fought back and cut their lead to three points late. But again, late in the game, we had a couple of defensive lapses that allowed Connecticut to get some easy baskets, and that turned out to be the difference in the game. ”

On Tina Charles’ 30-point effort, and her third-quarter play that fueled Connecticut’s run:
“We have to play better defense in the post. Tina is very tough, but we just allowed her to catch the ball in the post and back us down for easy baskets. That just can’t happen.”

On leading scorer Monique Currie being held to 5 points on 2-for-11 shooting, and scoreless in the second half on 0-for-7 shooting:
“Monique is one of our better players, but I thought they did a good job of collapsing on her when she drove to the baskets. We have to do a better job of drive-and-kicks. That didn’t happen. We did it late and we started to knock down some threes late, but we just have to be more consistent with that.”

With this being such a hard-fought game, do you take any positives away from this loss?
“Absolutely. We can play with anybody in this league. We’ve proven that. We played Minnesota to a two-point game. Chicago beat us on a last-second shot. We had some defensive breakdowns that allowed them to take the lead. We can play with anybody in the league, we just have to close out games. That’s just about confidence and executing down the stretch, and that’s just where we have to get better.”

Washington Mystics Forward Crystal Langhorne

On Tina Charles’ effort:
“Tina is a great player and she is going to do her thing. We let her get some easy chip-ins in the first half, which got her going, and then she was really hot in the second half and she was hitting everything. We just needed to contain her a little better than we did. I was telling my teammates that when you’re that hot, you feel good about all the shots you take. That’s the way she played tonight.”

With this being such a hard-fought game, do you take any positives away from this loss?
“At this point, we’re only five games in. We just need to pull out games and get wins. There are a lot of things that we do well. We have to learn how to close out our games, execute down the stretch and get stops when we need to get stops.”
