Mystics Return Home for Clash with Silver Stars

The Washington Mystics are returning home after a two game road trip where they went 1-1. Luckily for Washington the team they beat — the San Antonio Silver Stars — are on the docket for tonight at Verizon Center, which tips off at 7 pm.

In their last meeting — on July 12 — the Mystics had four players in double figures led by Crystal Langhorne who had 14 points and seven rebounds. Defensively, however, defensively Washington stood out holding San Antonio to 39.4% shooting and outrebounded them 44-25. The Mystics struggled with turnovers committing 16 to the Silver Stars’ seven.

Leading the way for San Antonio (4-9) are guards Jia Perkins and Shenise Johnson who had 22 and 15 points respectively when these teams met on Friday. Both Perkins and Johnson should provide critical matchups for Washington’s starting guard duo of Ivory Latta and Matee Ajavon. The Mystics, who have won three of four, will also have to look out for guard Danielle Robinson who averages 11.8 points and 7.1 assists per game.

During their last meeting with the Silver Stars, the Mystics held a 14-point lead in the third quarter, but San Antonio rallied to a one-point lead until Washington grabbed the reigns again to eventually win 83-73.

These next two home games — which are against the two teams the Mystics faced on their short road trip — are critical for their season. Washington currently posts a 7-7 record, which is good for third in the East. The New York Liberty sit one game behind them with a 6-8 record.

On Sunday, the Mystics will face the Chicago Sky again after barely losing to them last Wednesday. The Sky are second in the East with a 10-4 record, so a victory on Sunday will also be critical.
