MARIANNE STANLEY JOINS MYSTICS COACHING STAFF
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Washington Mystics Head Coach Julie Plank announced that Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame member Marianne Stanley has joined her coaching staff. Stanley will be primarily responsible for coaching post players.
“I am truly ecstatic to have Marianne Stanley join our staff as an assistant coach,” Plank stated. “She has been in the WNBA, both as a head coach and as an assistant, for the last decade. Marianne is no stranger to winning and coaching the absolute best players in the game. She is a motivator, an unbelievable tactician, and her knowledge on both ends of the floor will be a huge resource for me. I could not be more pleased to have her join our quality team, and know that Marianne will do whatever she can to help us achieve our ultimate goal…a WNBA Championship in D.C.!”
Stanley brings a wealth of experience to the Mystics. She has over 20 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level with stops at Stanford, University of California-Berkeley and University of Southern California. In 2007, she assisted C. Vivian Stringer during Rutgers University’s run to the NCAA Championship game. Stanley is also very familiar with the WNBA and coached the Mystics for two seasons. In addition, she has also been an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Sparks and the New York Liberty.
“I want to thank Julie Plank, Angela Taylor and the Washington Mystics organization for the opportunity to join them in working to bring a WNBA championship to Washington, DC. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead, and am anxious to get to work with Coach Plank, her entire staff, and all of the Washington Mystics players in pursuing and achieving this goal”, said Stanley.
Stanley has earned numerous accolades throughout her career. She was named the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year in 1993, the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1985, and an All-American selection as a player in 1975 and 1976 at Immaculata College. In 2002, she was voted the WNBA Coach of the Year. That same year she was also inducted in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She is currently in her second season as an assistant coach with the reigning Russian League and Russian Cup Champions UMMC Ekaterinberg which features WNBA players Cappie Pondexter, Deanna Nolan, Ann Wauters, Sandrine Gruda, and Candace Parker.
