Washington Mystics Senior Vice President of Business and Basketball Operations Judy Holland Burton today announced that the team has acquired 5-6 guard Tamicha Jackson from the Phoenix Mercury in a three-team trade also involving the Connecticut Sun. In the trade, the Mystics, having acquired Jackson, sent 6-2 forward/center Asjha Jones to the Connecticut Sun and the Sun dealt the team’s eighth overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft to the Mercury.

“We are excited to add another talented guard to our roster,” said Holland Burton. “Going into this season, we knew we needed to get a post player and increase our depth at the point guard position. After acquiring center Chasity Melvin in January’s Dispersal Draft and now with the addition of Jackson our mission is complete.”

In 2003, Jackson started every game for Phoenix and finished the season ranked eighth in the league in assists (146). She averaged 28.2 minutes per game, 8.8 points per game, 4.3 assists per game and 2.4 rebounds per game. Jackson also shot 81.1% from the free throw line.

Jackson was drafted in the first round (eighth overall) by the Detroit Shock in the 2000 WNBA Draft. She was traded to the Portland Fire following her rookie season. She spent two seasons (2001, 2002) with the Fire before the team folded in 2002. Jackson was selected in the 2003 Dispersal Draft (fourth overall) by the Phoenix Mercury.

Jackson graduated in 2000 from Louisiana Tech and was a 2000 Kodak All-American. She was a 2000 Naismith Award Finalist and was named to the Women’s Basketball Journal 2000 All-American Defensive Team. Jackson also earned a Gold Medal with the U.S. Junior World Championship Team (1996-97).

Asjha Jones was selected in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2002 WNBA Draft by Washington. In two seasons with the Mystics, she averaged 7.5 points per game and 3.4 rebounds per game and shot 69.3% from the line.
