Today’s 78-88 loss to the New York Liberty now puts the Mystics at a record of 9-10 where they remaining the third seed in the East. The Liberty (8-11) are in fifth place and are one game behind Washington

The Mystics are coming off of a week break because of the All-Star game last Saturday.

This was the first of four meetings the Mystics have with the Liberty this season. The teams face off again on Tuesday August 6th in New York at the Liberty’s Camp Day. Tipoff is at 11 am.

Leading the way for the Mystics was guard Matee Ajavon who had 20 points. Rookie guard also added 11 points and four assists.

In their first game since the All-Star game, Washington’s All-Stars, forward Crystal Langhorne and guard Ivory Latta, had eight and 11 points respectively. Langhorne also grabbed eight rebounds.

Washington grabbed its first lead of the game on a layup from guard Nadirah McKenith with 6:21 minutes remaining in the first half.

New York’s Kara Braxton had the first 10 points for her team, while the Mystics held All-Star starting guard Cappie Pondexter without a point until 7:35 remaining in the second quarter.

The Mystics rank eighth in the WNBA in steals with 7.29 per game. Tonight they ended with 12 steals.

In attendance at tonight’s game were several members of the Washington Wizards including John Wall, Bradley Beal, Otto Porter, Glen Rice, and Kevin Seraphin. Wizards head coach Randy Wittman was also in attendance.

Mystics center Kia Vaughn was on the New York Liberty from 2009-2012 before Washington acquired her in the offseason. This was her first matchup against her former team. In addition center Quanitra Hollingsworth was a member of the Liberty in 2011.

Mystics guard Matee Ajavon and center Kia Vaughn and Liberty guards Cappie Pondexter and Essence Carson all played together at Rutgers.

Next up for Washington is their third matchup with the Chicago Sky whom they will face on the road on Friday. After that the Mystics return home on Sunday to face the Los Angeles Sparks. Tipoff is at 4 pm.
