2009 WNBA Draft Lottery to Be Held on December 9th
Mystics Have Chance at #1 Pick
Washington, D.C. – The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) will host its Draft Lottery in New York City on Tuesday, December 9. The Washington Mystics, who finished the 2008 season with a 10-24 record, have the second best opportunity to gain the top pick in the draft. The Atlanta Dream, who finished 4-30, have the best statistical chance at the top pick.
"During this off-season, we plan to aggressively build our roster through the dispersal draft, free agency, and the college draft. Now that the 2008-09 college season is underway, we are looking forward to finding out what pick we will have in Tuesday's lottery so that we can identify those seniors who fit into our system and who will best complement the players we currently have on our roster,” said Washington Mystics General Manager Angela Taylor. “With five picks in the 2009 draft, we not only will be able to add depth to our roster, but with a little luck we will also add an impact player as a result of being awarded a top pick in the lottery.”
The WNBA Lottery includes the five teams that did not qualify for the 2008 WNBA Playoffs. The lottery will establish the first five picks of the draft. The order of selection for the remainder of the first round as well as the order of selection for the second and third round is determined by inverse order of their respective regular-season records.
Fourteen balls numbered 1-14 will be placed in a lottery machine and mixed. There are 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, without regard to their order of selection. One thousand of those combinations will be assigned to the five non-playoff teams based on their order of finish in the 2008 regular season. The remaining combination will be unassigned.
The lottery will be conducted using 14 numbered ping-pong balls. There are 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, without regard to their order of selection. One thousand of those combinations will be assigned to the six non-playoff teams based on their order of finish in the 2008 regular season. The remaining combination will be unassigned.
Four balls will then be drawn to the top to determine a four-digit combination. The team that has been assigned that four-ball combination will receive the No. 1 pick. The four balls will then be placed back into the machine and the process will be repeated to determine the second and third picks. If the one unassigned combination is drawn, the balls will be placed back into the machine and the process will be repeated until an assigned combination is drawn.
