Check out some quotes and Notes from Mystics Training Camp...

Training Camp Day #13

Maryland Head Coach Brenda Freese
“It’s always exciting to be out here, watching basketball at any level.  We obviously support the Mystics and everything that they do for our community and really for young people girls growing up.  This is a dream that every girl wants to live out.”

Marynell Meadors on the Scrimmage vs. New York
“I thought we played better at the end of the scrimmage than at the beginning.  We just haven’t played against anybody with everyone in the line-up.  Overall, I thought our effort was really good.  I thought when we started running our plays that we did a pretty good job of execution.”

On the rookies
“The rookies have gotten better from the beginning of our training camp.  I think the number one thing right now is that we get three of our veterans back and out there playing.  Then the rookies will be playing against them everyday, and I think it kind of settles the rookies down a little bit because they see what they have to do to be successful.  I think that once the team is set and we start playing together you will see a vast improvement in our team.”

Gillian Goring
“The scrimmage was great.  I think I did pretty well, but I still have to work on a lot of stuff.  I helped alter some shots defensively and tried to get in the groove of being an offensive player.  So, it was great today and it’s the first step of being a rookie.  I’m ecstatic about that.  I just want to get better everyday, come out, work hard at practice and improve every time I step on the court.”

 Scrimmage Scores:

1st 10-minute period:  20-6 L

2nd 10-minute period:  25-17 L

3rd 10-minute period:  15-13 L

Training Camp Day #12

Marynell Meadors
“We didn’t win, we didn’t’ play well in spurts. There were some bright spots. I thought Bernice Mosby played really consistent and everybody else was a little nervous. We played without our top six players and that makes a huge difference. Detroit had probably six out of their eight players, they were only missing two players, Cheryl Ford and Kara Braxton, the rest of the team was intact. I thought in Chicago we had first game jitters. I thought everyone was nervous but I thought we settled down in the second half and started to play some really good basketball. I just think we have to continue to work and it’s a work in progress right now. We’re getting our veterans coming in and we’ll get them back in shape and they’ll catch onto the plays very quickly.”

Tamara James
“We got a lot of the kinks out. Our chemistry wasn’t there like we hoped. We were missing a lot of our veterans of course and that showed up on the court. We showed up and showed a great effort and showed the coaches what they needed to see about who they need on the team and who can help out. We’ll get it together.”

Training Camp Day #11

Richie Adubato
“Exhibition season is completely different then when you’re playing someone during the season. Naturally you have your starting group and rotation, but right now we have to look at people. We have 11 and 12 people and we’ll probably play six one half of the game and another six the second half of the game. So we can give them the opportunity to show what they can do against competition in the league. So we can evaluate and be able to make our cuts down the road. We are looking for execution in the offensive plays we’ve put in the from the last eight days, we’re looking for our defense to play, we’re looking for our press execution. We are looking at individuals and we are looking at what we’ve been working on during training camp.”

Coco Miller
“Its going to be interesting and we’re missing a few players but we have a lot of energy here, a lot of young players. We’re going to go out there and play hard. People are starting to feel comfortable and more relaxed. We have good chemistry out there.”

Marynell Meadors
“We’re playing Chicago and they are much improved from last season. They beat Phoenix last night by 20. We know we have our hands full with all of our players not here yet. I’m excited about seeing some of these players playing against other players. On Sunday we catch Detroit who is the defending champion. We have our work cut out for us this weekend. We’ll just go up there and see what we can do.”

Training Camp Day #10

Nikki Teasley
“It feels good to be home. It’s been a long time overseas. It feels good to be back, get use to everything. There are a lot of new faces. I walked in and I thought I was in the wrong place. These young girls are really trying hard. I’ve been impressed with some of the people. I’m looking forward to getting out there and joining them.”

Marynell Meadors
“It was a great practice. We had a lot of energy. We had officials in the end and we scrimmaged. I thought we did a good job of running our offenses and staying in them and looking for the best possible shots we could get out of them. I thought we really played well.”

Meadors on this weekend’s preseason games…
“We’ll get to see how we play against someone else. We’ve played against each other for the past couple of weeks and we’re sick of beating up on each other. We want to go out and play against someone else and see if plays work and see if what we’re doing is right. We can just judge where we are at this point in the season.

Notes The Mystics practiced today at Verizon Center and will practice there tomorrow before flying to Milwaukee… Tickets are now on sale for the preseason game against the Israeli National Team, Anda Ramat Hasharon. Training Camp Day #9

Assistant Coach Marynell Meadors
“Great effort today as usual. Megan Vogel has played very well both offensively and defensively. We learned a couple more offensive plays and more inbounds plays. Everybody’s just giving it everything they have and they just want to make this team. They’ve come out every single day and worked really really hard.”

“I don’t know exactly when they are coming back (the veterans). I think Nakia (Sanford) is still playing. Her team won. Nikki Teasley got back yesterday and is at the doctor’s today. Chasity (Melvin) is still playing and DeLisha’s still playing. Once we get them all back, we can start molding our team a little bit more. The players that have come into training camp have done a great job of learning everything. It’s like a fruit basket turnover sometimes. We hit them with so many things to learn and having to process all that sometimes they get bogged down with thinking too much instead of playing. It’s a lot of plays. It’s something new everyday.”

Megan Vogel
“I have a presentation that I’m trying to give tomorrow (for school). I’m sending it in via DVD. I’m going to record myself and then I’ve got some stuff for my strength and conditioning internship and then I’m pretty much done.”

Vogel on the preseason games this weekend…
“I’m excited about this weekend. The good thing is that it’s close to where I’m from so I’ll have a lot of family there. It’ll be nice to play some games. Training camp is great but you never know how good you are until you play against someone else.”

Tamara James
“I think I’ve been playing good. I think I’ve approved over the off-season and worked on my weakness, my ball handling, my defense. I think it’s showing in training camp. We have a lot of talent in training camp and it’s very competitive. Yes I miss the other vets. I haven’t seen them in so long. I can’t wait to reunite with them again and get the chemistry going again so we can get ready for the season.”

Notes Today the first official cut was made, the Mystics cut Forward/Center Dalila Eshe… The Mystics will host the New York Liberty on Wednesday, May 9th for the team’s open practice at Trinity University. Doors will open at noon. The practice is free to the public…

Tune In Chief Operating Officer, Curtis Symonds will be on Comcast SportsNet tonight at 6:15 p.m. to talk about the Mystics upcoming season…

Training Camp Day #8

Marynell Meadors
“Today’s practice was outstanding. We added some additional offensive plays. I would like to point out a couple of players that really played well. Mykeema Ford is doing a great job at point guard and Allyson Hardy is also playing really well at point guard. Coco (Miller) who came in two days ago, she looks like she’s not missed a beat since last season. She’s shot the ball extremely well. I think Laurie (Koehn) is playing much much stronger and she’s doing more things to get the ball to the rim more than she ever has. More than I’ve ever seen her do. She’s a lot stronger with her leaping and taking care of the ball and her dribbling and handling the ball better. The good players are beginning to rise to the top, the others are playing about the same. The enthusiasm that we’ve had in camp is outstanding. They really enjoy playing with each other. I really think that’s the key. They all get along really well. They help each other out. TJ (Tamara James) has done a great job trying to help the younger players and showing some leadership out there. AB (Alana Beard) is on the sideline. It’s good that someone else is stepping up. DeLisha’s (Milton Jones) not here yet and AB on the side, we need people to step up. I think she’s done that (TJ) and Laurie’s done that.”

Laurie Koehn
“It’s been good. We have a lot of young players here right now. Everyone’s just fighting and competing. I think everyone’s starting to learn the offense and the system a little bit which helps. We have a ways to go with the offense since the plays are all brand new. I think everyone’s working hard and wants to do everything they can to make this team better. It’s been competitive and fun and I’m looking forward to the season.”

Bernice Mosby
“Training camp is going good. They switched my position again to make me more comfortable and I guess they’re going to plug me in at the three and the four. I’m still trying to recover from the little strain in my quad. It’s getting better day-by-day. I strained my quad three days ago and so now it’s starting to get back to normal and its feeling better.”

Notes – Bernice Mosby has a paper due today for a class at Baylor… Right after practice, Meredith Alexis went back to James Madison University to take a final exam… The entire team will be at the Wizards-Cleveland game tonight at Verizon Center… Nikki Teasley is back in DC and will in practice on Tuesday… Assistant Coach Tree Rollins missed practice on Sunday so he could attend his daughters college graduation…

Tune In – Chief Operating Officer, Curtis Symonds will be on Comcast SportsNet on Tuesday, May 1st at 6:15 p.m.

Training Camp Day #6

Marynell Meadors
“Today was a good practice. We ran our plays all the way through to the end. We got some good looks at the basket. Everyone put a lot of effort into what they were doing. This has been a really good group. They come to practice to work hard everyday. We have a day off tomorrow so that’ll give everyone a day to recover.”

Mykeema Ford
“Practice went well today. We’re developing as a team. The coaches are pushing us hard. Everyone’s working hard and everything’s falling into place. I’m having a good time. Tomorrow I’m just going to rest and get my hair done.”

Nikki Blue
“I think today’s practice went really good. We’re making progress. It seems like everyone is really competitive out there. I’m working hard rehabbing and just trying to get healthy so I can come back sometime soon. Tomorrow isn’t a day off for me. Navin (Hettechchiari) has me coming in at 8:00 a.m. I still have to come in and lift weights trying to get my knee ready for the season.”

Notes Tomorrow the Mystics will have the day off from training camp with some players going to the gym to work with the trainer… May 2nd Linda Hargrove and the coaches will make the first cuts… The Mystics are getting ready for their first road trip of the season. Next Thursday the team will leave for Milwaukee where they are facing the Chicago Sky on May 4th and then it’s off to Cleveland to take on the Detroit Shock on May 6th…

Community News On Wednesday, May 16th, the Mystics foundation is still taking orders for the bowling event at Lucky Strike Lanes from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The ENTIRE Mystics team will be at the bowling event along with Mystics President and Managing Partner, Sheila Johnson along with players from the Baltimore Ravens, former Redskins player, Brian Mitchell and other celebrities. Tickets are still available… Saturday, April 28th, Linda Hargrove will be at National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Luncheon at noon…

Training Camp Day #5

Marynell Meadors
“We went over four new plays today and they picked up on them very quickly which is good. We’re trying to end our plays the same way so it’s not so confusing to them. They’ve really hustled. One of the players that we picked up for training camp that sticks out for me is Meredith Alexis. She’s done a fantastic job. She’s all about hustle and rebounding. She’s all over the boards all the time. Allyson Hardy has really stepped up.”

Alana Beard
“Training camp was good today. A lot of people want to make the team and they are working hard. It’s good to see. We have a lot of young players that are coming back from last year and that are doing great job of keeping everyone in tact and keeping everyone focused. I’m feeling good. I fell like I’m getting better every day. Our trainer is doing a good job of rehabbing me and we’re both working hard. We’ll see how it goes.”

Coco Miller
“It feels good to be back here. I’m really excited for the season. I’m looking forward to the season. We have the main core coming back so it’s going to be an exciting year. Hopefully everyone’s healthy.”

Meredith Alexis
“I’m just excited to be here right now after not being drafted. Everything’s going well. I’m just trying to hustle and have a great attitude. Hopefully I’ll be with them this season.”

Notes The Mystics are still missing Chasity Melvin, DeLisha Milton-Jones, Nakia Sanford, Nikki Teasley and Zane Teilane from training camp…. Zane was married last year and is now going by Zane Taman… The Mystics foundation is still taking orders for the bowling event on May 16th at Lucky Strike Lanes from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m…

Training Camp Day #4

Head Coach Richie Adubato
“The fourth day is what we considered the most difficult day because by then the fatigue has really caught up with the players. Even though we worked hard with transition offense and defense and then we lighten up and go with the shooting drills, then we shoot some fouls, we try to mix it up, but still, the fourth day is the most difficult day. Fatigue problems, muscle ache. Navin (Hettechchiari) has been really good because we’ve been stretching them down and going to the pool which is great. No matter what you do the fourth day is difficult.”

Assistant Coach Marynell Meadors
“We put in a couple more offenses. Everyone’s catching on to everything but then when we scrimmage and they forget everything. But they came back and are learning everything really really well. Effort has been outstanding all training camp. I think Tamara James looks really good. She came back with a positive attitude. She’s worked on her game. She has a more complete game.”

Dalila Eshe
“I think everybody has worked really hard. There’s a big difference when you go three and a half hours or whether you go two a days. I like the three and a half hours better. We get a lot of opportunities to walk through stuff and the coaches really break it down for us so we can understand it. I think Coach does a great job of breaking stuff down for us. We’re all just coming out here to try to make the team. It’s been really competitive.”

Allyson Hardy
“It’s been a great learning experience. The veterans have been looking out for us. Everyone’s working hard to try to make a spot. My body hurts bad, really bad. After three hours you can’t help but be sore.”

Notes Coco Miller will arrive in DC tonight so she’ll be in practice on Thursday… After practice the team hit the weight room and did some more running in the pool…

Community News - In honor of Take Your Child to Work Day on Thursday, April 26th, Tamara James will speak to kids at the AARP and Rita Williams will be at Amtrak…

Training Camp Day #3

Assistant Coach Marynell Meadors
“Today was the third day of practice. Everyone is always really really sore on the third day. We found that out today. Everyone was a little stiff but I tell you what, they fought through fatigue and they fought through being sore and all that and it ended up being a really great practice. We got a lot of things accomplished. We ran and put in some more inbounds plays and some half court offenses. We scrimmaged three quarters and it was really good. I thought we ran the offenses very good with the officials. I think they’ll continue to get better and better every day.”

Assistant Coach Tree Rollins
“(Gillian) Goring looked good. I know she’s big, I know she handles her own in the box, she gets rebounds which is great. She blocks shots by just putting her hands up. The sleepers like (Mykeema) Ford, she’s really quick. Bernice Mosby, she’s doing what we thought she could do. She’s increasing her range in her shooting drills, so that’s going to help out. Megan (Vogel) she can really play, she’s strong, and she has a great body. She has a great basketball IQ; she’s everything that you want in a basketball player. I’m really impressed with TJ (Tamara James). She worked on her defense, moving her feet on the outside. We all know she can score so that’s not a problem. Laurie (Koehn) is another one that improved from last year. This is her third year now; she’s really coming around as a basketball player. She’s learning how to handle herself. This is the first time in my two years here that I’ve seen her take the ball to the hole with authority. She’s really looking great. It’s early but everyone’s looking great. I really like Teana Miller who we got in the dispersal draft. She sets some mean picks, she posts big.”

Gillian Goring
“We’re all looking good as a team. We’re all feeling sore today since it’s the third day. Everybody pushed through it, everybody hustled, and everybody was rebounding.”

Notes Nikki Blue was at training camp today but sat out with the trainer because of her strained right knee which she hurt overseas in Turkey… Meredith Alexis received an accidental hit during practice and had to go to the doctor to get stitches on her chin…

Tune In – Rookie Bernice Mosby and Alana Beard will be on Comcast SportsNet on Wednesday, April 25th at 6:00 p.m. The players will talk about the upcoming Mystics season and even talk a little bit about the NBA Playoffs…

Community News – General Manager Linda Hargrove and Nikki Blue will participate in the first Malaria Awareness Day with First Lady Laura Bush on Wednesday, April 25th at Friendship Public Charter School in Washington, DC from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Hargrove and Blue will participate in a basketball shooting contest with the kids at the school. In honor of Take Your Child to Work Day on Thursday, April 26th, Tamara James will speak to kids at the AARP and Rita Williams will be at Amtrak…

Training Camp Day #2

Mystics President and Managing Partner, Sheila Johnson
“I’m really excited to start the season again. I’m so excited about what I’m seeing. I don’t have the real trained eye but all of them look like great prospects.”

Assistant Coach Marynell Meadors
“It was much better today. I thought everybody’s nerves were more intact then they were yesterday. Yesterday I thought everybody was real excited and maybe a little overexcited so they were a little nervous about everything. I thought today we settled down. We ran the three different offenses we taught them. Their timing was a lot better and their spacing on the floor was a lot better. I really love this team because they play extremely hard and their effort is just fantastic. I think, just keep working and tomorrow will be a better day than today.”

Crystal Robinson
“I think we have a good young group. It’s going to be a battle for a lot of different positions. I think Megan (Vogel) is a great young player. Right now, not everyone is here, so the young players get to showcase what they can do. They get the opportunity to really take advantage of training camp. I feel good. My finger is doing well. I’m ready to get started. Training camp is the hardest part of the season but after that, everything is down hill.”

Teana Miller
“I think we did really great. We’re just putting things together. We’re just trying to learn to play together. We’re just trying to get a feel of the coach and the assistants. It’s going pretty good. I’m glad to be back in the states and get to speak English.”

After practice, the team took their workout to the pool. Here Head Athletic Trainer Navin Hettechchiari explains the exercise…

“All of these girls have been running overseas and pounding on their legs. We still have to do cardiovascular but instead of running on the hard surface, we come here and run in the pool. It’s low impact. You’re getting the buoyancy effect, which gives you the resistance so you’re almost running against resistance. The water also massages them too so it’s a great benefit, nothing but positives with running in the water.”

NotesNikki Blue and Coco Miller will be at training camp tomorrow… Sheila Johnson spoke to the players after practice and even stretched with them…

Training Camp Day #1

Bernice Mosby
“I had a little jitters. I think it’s normal for somebody not knowing what to expect coming in. The girls here are very welcoming and opened their arms up and complimented us. So it made it easier. I think I did alright today. I don’t think I did my best or what I’m capable of doing but it’s the first day. When training camp is over is when it will all sink in that I’m finally here.”

Assistant Coach Marynell Meadors
“The main thing we worked on was shooting drills. We worked on the half court on defensive drills, trying to defend penetration, penetrating the gap, cuts. We broke it down into post and guards. The guards worked on a lot of shooting drills, they worked on defensive drills where they go to the help side. We taught them an offense and a couple of options off of an offense. Then we went to a full court scrimmage. Everyone looked good.”

Megan Vogel
“No, I wasn’t nervous. I don’t really get nervous to play basketball. I guess I feel that you have to prepare as much as possible and then it’s in Gods plans. The players are great. Laurie (Koehn) is great, I have to guard her all the way out to her car. There are just some really great players and they aren’t even all here yet. They have a really talented team and it’s just a lot of fun.”

Head Coach Richie Adubato
“It was a very anxious moment for most of the people that are here because they are draft picks or free agents. They look at this as a golden opportunity to make the team. We have a terrific group, they have a great attitude, and they worked hard. We worked them for three and a half hours today. Normally when we go three hours, they have the whole day to get off their feet, get the proper nutrition that they need.”

Richie On…

Bernice Mosby
“Bernice looked very good today. She can score. She has very long arms, a lot like DeLisha (Milton-Jones). We think she’ll be able to compete with the big fours in the league. We would like to see her convert to a three. She can really run the floor and she has a good feel for the game. She can flat out score, she has good moves inside, good moves going to the basket.”

Megan Vogel
“She’s a complete basketball player. She can shoot the three, she can go to the basket, she can pass, and she’s very strong. She can play the two or the three, she’s a left hander. She reminds me a little bit of Vicki Johnson who I had in New York. She’s the same way, just a very solid basketball player.”

Gillian Goring
“She’s a pretty good player, pretty solid. She’s big; she’s coming off back surgery. She played well until she kind of tired out. She doesn’t have the stamina right now. She has a great attitude. You can’t grow players like this. She’ll be in competition with all of our big people up front.”

Teana Miller
“She played overseas but had an injury so she only played the last month. She’s a veteran; she’s played a couple of years. She’s pretty strong inside. It’s going to be a big battle up front. Because we don’t have a lot of spots on our roster, it’s going to be a very hard fought battle to make this team. As we’re looking at it, we think our draft picks have a chance.”

Notes – Seven players were missing from training camp, Nikki Blue, Chasity Melvin, Coco Miller, DeLisha Milton Jones, Nakia Sanford, Nikki Teasley and Zane Teilane. All have overseas commitments. Nikki Blue and Coco Miller will all arrive to training camp this week… Alana Beard sat out of training camp with a sore left shoulder. Doctors will evaluate her further today… Rita Williams is in the Mystics training camp for the second straight year…
