Hey Mystics fans! This is Jonathan Akman checking in with the first in a series of training camp blog entries for washingtonmystics.com. My goal is to give you a sense of the action here at the Verizon Center. I can assure you that everyone involved with the organization is working hard to make this season the best yet.
With less than 24 hours before the team’s first preseason game of the season, the Mystics used this morning’s practice to get ready for the New York Liberty. Coach Plank praised New York’s pick-and-roll offense and the Mystics worked on a variety of defensive rotations.
After six tough practices, Coach Plank’s voice is getting quite hoarse. To her credit, Plank is still talking.
After some free throw shooting, the team went through its offensive sets. The team is getting more and more comfortable by the day with Coach Plank’s offense.
For a rookie, Marissa Coleman is very poised. Not only is she picking up team concepts very well, she is also vocal presence.
The other rookie, Josephine Owino, brings tremendous size to the low post. I doubt there is a player on the roster with longer arms or bigger hands. When Owino puts an arm out into the passing lane, the ball is not going to reach its target.
As the players huddled at center court after practice, the coaches offered to watch extra film or go over scouting reports with the players during their train ride to New York tomorrow. The coaching staff has had a very open-door approach to talking with players.
Before the players departed the practice court for the locker room, strength-and-conditioning coach Lisa Ciaravella led the team in a stretching drill. When they wrapped up, Ciaravella informed that players that they had protein shakes waiting for them in the locker room.
