Training Camp 2007 - Practice Quotes
4/26/07

Head Coach Jenny Boucek
Jenny Boucek:
What is the main focus of camp, knowing that it is a winning tradition?
"We're putting in our systems and we are establishing our culture, for the younger one's especially. The older players know who we are and what it takes to win a championship. But the younger players, the earlier we get them on board with that, the better off we'll be. So, a lot of it right now is just being conscientious of this is who we are and this is what we are all about.

Has any player in camp really stood out for you?
"I wouldn't say anybody in particular. I think they've all done a great job. There's not one of them who isn't trying their hardest, listening and isn't teachable. They're improving every day and that's all you can ask, I'm pleased with all of them.

How's the rookie, Antionette Wells, doing?
She's improving every day and that's all we can ask of her. It's a lot for a rookie to be the only one in here on a championship team, with championship players and championship expectations! But she's handled it just great and like I said, she's improving quickly and so I'm excited about the work that she's gotten done.

How great is it to have Yolanda back on the court?
She's like another assistant coach out there. Not only is she smart, but she sets an example and a tone for everything that we do. And all the things that we have been talking about, she models so it makes everything a lot easier.

Kara Lawson:
How is training camp progressing?
Piece by piece we talk about a new piece to our offense every day before practice and then we go out on the court and run through it. That's kind of nice because you get something to build on each day and something that's new so it doesn't seem like the same thing every day. Defensively we are still a work in progress. It's going to be a slow climb. We're still trying to get our concepts down and getting used to playing with one another. I think that process will speed up as we get more of our players back. Defensively just having Yo back yesterday and today makes a significant difference. Because now we have somebody out there who knows and understands the defense in the post and then the other posts can look and say, "Oh, OK, this is how we're supposed to do it." So once everyone starts filtering in from overseas, that defense will start picking up too.

How much do you enjoy having Kings Assistant Coach Scott Brooks practice with you?
Coach Brooks and I actually played one-on-one a couple times in the off-season. He always told me that if I were here and if it worked with his schedule he would play one-on-one with me. We only got to do it a couple times because of my TV schedule and being out of town and he had to travel with the Kings. But he was always looking for people to play a game, he still has it! I used to watch him growing up, but he can still shoot, so I was like, "Alright, I got to get up on him" because he was killing me, he was shooting threes like crazy!

How's Antionette doing?
It's a tough situation. I can't think of any situation, since I have been here where we only have one rookie! We usually bring a lot of people for camp. So I imagine it has to be tough and at times frustrating for her because it's a new system and she probably feels like everyone else knows what they are doing. Today I felt like she made some steps forward, stuff is starting to click with her. And I think having Yo here really helps post players out because they get to see someone do things right and even if you are on her team, you are bound to get some things right sometimes, so that makes it easier for you to understand sometimes. She's the first one here everyday, because I'm usually the first one here and last one to leave everyday, but she gets here before me. So now I'm usually the second one to get here! She must get here really early, because I usually get here an hour and 45 minutes before practice and she gets here before that! She wants to get better and that's a good thing to see because not a lot of rookies in this league realize that getting here early and working on your game is the best way to get better.
